I was curious to know what the easiest way was to hang a 10 lb. bookshelf speaker to a drop ceiling in a commercial application. I want to use a vantage ceiling mount, but I want to make sure the speaker is secure.
Thank You

One way is to cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to fit the tile opening and lag the mount up through the tile into the plywood. If you would choose this method you should have a couple of steel cables anchored into the hard deck and the other ends attached to eyelets into the wood for safety and some strain releif of the tile grid.

Another way is to mount a pipe clamp to the hard deck above the drop ceiling and have the pipe poke down below the tile and mount to the pipe.

Whatever method you choose, the speaker should be mounted in a way that it stays put even if the grid were to come down. At least that is the way they see it here at the University.

BB, Matt is correct; the speaker mounting should be independent of the ceiling grid and tiles completely.

In some commercial applications the suspended ceiling maybe consider as part of the return airflow or Plenum. This could result in an in ceiling speaker having to be installed in a fire proof enclosure. You need to check your local building code to see if this applies to your installation.

In addition there are some comoanies that sell brackets and enclosures for in ceiling speakers in suspended ceiling.

I was under the impression he wants to hang the speaker below the ceiling, not in it.
