Hi,
I have a universal remote control that does both IR and RF (Denon Aktis) and I want to make it use RS-232 to control my Panasonic 50" plasma TV.
Here's my idea: Get a programmable IR to RS-232 gateway that will receive an IR command of my choosing and convert it to an RS-232 command of my choosing and send it out a DB9 connector to a serial cable hooked up to my TV.
I've scoured the web for such a device but have only found the Xantech IR-DC4 which seems to be specialized for control of a specific device.
Question: Are their any generic programmable IR to RS232 gateway products out there?
Any help would be appreciated. -Don Woodward

There is a company called Inline that makes such a device, actually it does contact closure/IR to RS-232, 422, and 485 protocols... it's model number CTL101. Here's the link to the page. [Link: inlineinc.com]

$89.00 if they already have data, like $139.00 if they don't, I think. very pro., very good, worth it. BY TIME, I mean the xantech requires effort, the celadon is plug and play.

Hello.
It may not exactly what you're after, but I created a little PIC16x84 program once do do exactly what you want, but for a projector instead.
The PIC code is small, runs on 4800BPS, can be modified to whatever commands you would like to send. Accepts RC5 ir commands. It can all be tucked inside a DB9 shell.
I can probably give you the PIC code, but this requiers you to be handy with a PIC assembler yourself, as I can't give that much support...
Regards TommyE
