well, you heard the good news... now the bad:

there are no descrete codes for any current model, however, you can buy a upgrade chip for any old set (HLM/HLN series) excluding some features from the HLM617W, for the following features:

1. Discreet Codes for on/off functions
2. Discreet Codes for video input select functions
3. Last setting memory for Aspect Ratio and Picture adjustments for each input
4. DNIe (not available on HLN617W)

pretty cool huh?

now more bad news:

The charge for this limited time offer is $200 plus applicable sales taxes.
It requires an in-home service call and should take about an hour to perform.

more bad news:

The program begins July 1, 2003 and will run through July 31,2003.
You can start registering June 15,2003.

i think its crap it only lasts 2 weeks!! i hope everyone reads about it in time!!

i will probably post on other forums too, just so everyone has a chance to see it. i know i have been waiting on this for a looooooooooooooooong time, and it will make my life (mostly for my wife) soooooo much easier!

oh yea, here is the link [Link: samsungusa.com]

does this mean that the newer models will incorportate the changes? I have a customer interested in the 50" DLP and I was told there were no discrete codes for it. This was just yesterday so I hadn't had time to research it yet when I saw this post...

THe most current version of the 50" should have firmware version 211 and should have discrete power out of the box. The input commands are part of firmware version 214 which supposedly has started to ship. Some warehouses are still full of the old ones however.

now the next question is "how does it look?" I'm going to find one to look at this weekend but I just can't figure out how they are doing that set at that price.

The 50" and the 61" both look amazing. As with any display however, it is all about feeding it a good signal. Take a look at the HLN507W with the HD931 DVI output DVD player. Great combo.

Samsung DLP Discrete codes are in firmware versions 212 or later. To check the firmware version of your set you must enter into the Service Mode using your remote. Start with the TV turned off. Using the remote, enter the following sequence; Mute-1-8-2-Power. The set will come up with a service menu. The S/W Revision will be the last three numbers displayed in red near the bottom of the screen. To exit the Service Mode, turn the set off for about 1 minute before using again. Hmmm...I wonder what the other Service Options do that are displayed on the screen.

The other options displayed in the service menu are for service functions. There are some useful settings like gamma(default is 4, 1 gives better black detail) and the setting for the DNIe chip and some other useful tweaks. For the whole story on the service menu, see here:

The Samsung remote will NOT work discretely since it has no specific buttons for it to do so. It still only has the Input button to cycle through your inputs. You will need a learning remote to discretely access individual inputs.

This thread has more information on Discrete codes.

Here are the code #'s that I have found to work for my HLN5065W. Good luck.

Thanks for the list of codes, but just exactly what do I do with them? I just got the upgrade to an HLM for a client and need the codes to make him (and me) happy.

The Discrete codes are posted on this site under the Pronto section. The file is called "Samsung, HLN series" in the Discrete codes section. To use them, you will need a learning remote and the ability to either use the advanced code setups specific to your remote, or a PC programmable remote with the ability to use the Pronto .CCF or the HEX format for IR signals. If you have a different remote(MX-700, JP1, etc) the codes have been converted to just about every type of remote out there. The link is here:

Scroll down the page and you should find the remote format you need.
