Hello Everyone,

I've been in the A/V business in one form or another for 28 years. I began the journey on an aircraft carrier fixing CCTV and pilot landing television systems, then moved into commercial A/V working as a field tech on presentation / videoconferencing systems. I was with Sony for a while - fixing broadcast cameras, then worked as a designer for a few more system integration companies.

I'm currently self-employed and program AMX systems for commercial installations. I'm not necessarily avoiding the residential side - I just can't get myself psyched about working in someone's home.

I'm also working on an application that provides control over a network from a PC interface (a potential mine field). I believe I started the project because someone at AMX told me it couldn't be done reliably...my AMX controller and DVD player say otherwise :).

Hopefully, I can make a coherent contribution now and then.

My name is Bill and I live in Palm Beach County. I have been an electronic tinkerer since age 5. Recently an elaborate system of mine broke down and the person who sold it to me changed from one company to another. His new company does not service the system that I bought from his old company and his old company no longer serves elan either. This left me having no local contact except to call on people 40-60 miles away. Thus I took it upon myself to use my medical skills to fix my system. If my preamp was a person I would have been sued a long time ago. My journey to simply find out why my keypads will not control my preamp led me into strange areas like "punchboard repair" , RS485 circuits, optoisolators, use of toners and probes, as well ascircuit board repair. While my elan z630 is still ailing from a bad ir port.....I must admit I am having fun. My enthusiam for electronics is there. I know my limitations. I am very appreciative that the members of this site embrace new people like myself and enjoy sharing their knowledge.

Hello, I'm Cliff and while I'm not a professional installer, I've got questions only someone of that genus can answer. I live on the coast in Oregon and am a graphic artist/writer and have a couple of childrens books that I've written and done the artwork for. I also do 3D animation and modeling.

At the moment, I'm building a theater room for my brother and one his many purchases was Harmony 1100. I'm gonna scoot over to the right thread and drop a question or three so I can hopefully begin the process of understanding what ti is I'm installing!

Cheers

I just realized I never 'properly' introduced myself so here goes:

I'm Randall and I've been into audio since I was a wee lad. Became a DIY'er out of necessity as I could never afford new things OR have my old stuff professionally repaired. My dad taught me what he knew about vacuum tubes and piezo-pickups and I've tried to stay recent ever since. I grew up in Philadelphia area and studied Technical Theatre and Music- began doing sound design, FOH and Stage Monitor sound reinforcement and lighting for concerts and theatre, moved to New York City where I somehow got into the installation and design aspect of things, and then gradually wound up moving from professional into residential. I moved to London, UK in 2006 and work as the sole System Designer and CAD tech for a medium sized company.
I am also a musician, have a BA in Classical Gitar but been mostly playing electric bass in prog/rock bands for the past 15 years or so. I hate Bill Gates, Microsoft, and small children but love animals.

Awesome name and welcome to the forum. I like that you misspelled your user name on purpose so that its funny and relevant... unlike Duct Tape who clear doesn't know how to spell Duck Tape.
