Right here goes…

Firstly, I have just moved into a house with my other half and we’re looking at installing a surround sound system, we currently own a Sony Compact AV system DAV-S300 but I have a feeling this might not be up to much. I would like to change the speakers, as the standard ones are a bit arse. I have seen the KEF KHT2005’s for £500 and thought these would be a good purchase. Is it worth just replacing the speakers and connecting them to the Sony system, even though the output from it is only 30w a channel? Or would it be better to invest in a new amp as well?

Initially I was thinking of getting in-wall speakers but after speaking to several people, I came to the conclusion that the bass produced from them would be inadequate so I would still have to purchase Satellites and a sub so I thought the KEF’s would be the sensible choice (am I right?)

If It is best to replace the amp, can anybody suggest a good performer for around £150-£250?

If I get new amp, can I still connect my Sony system to it and use the inbuilt DVD/CD and tuner? (Political – my other half was given it as a present and doesn’t want to just put it to one side so integrating it would be the best solution all round)

Many thanks

Huw.

That is not necessarily so. I have some SpeakerCraft 8.5MT's and they have pretty good bass. If you need more, you can always add a sub (or even an inwall sub). My inwall sub goes down to 27Hz (+- 3db).

My suggestion is to Step up to a new reciever. In that price range (although im not familiar w/ the currency conversion rate) try the Denon AVR 1803. That would sound pretty good w/ the KEF speakers. If your budget can stand it 28- or 3803.

Just my 2c

Good hunting!
