Does anyone know if there are any discrete IR codes for ATV? This is a fantastic device for at least 3-4 uses/activities, but it would be much better if the activity was coded to one discrete IR code per activity (ie rent movie, watch movie, listen to music, view slideshow, etc.)

Don't think so... long MENU takes you to the top menu. Holding 2 buttons can reset the device and hold another 2 unpairs the remote.... that is all I found so far... well that and OFF.

This means I could create my own arbitrary IR codes within Crestron, to teach the ATV. The dilemma will be what data to enter, although to be honest I would probably just pick a random IR module from the Crestron IR database, for a device I'll never own or use (say, a VCR), and use its signals. It will be fun to see what other discrete functions can be selected. thanks @77W!

thanks @77W! What's a VCR? I actually found this learning to be a bit weird. Unless it's me and my perfectness. It's been a while, but the Skip ahead or Skip backward wasn't always what it would seem. But it was dependent on what mode the ATV was in. So play around with it and see if you like the response that you think you're getting. KOT

For anyone wondering what the full list of custom commands are without actually starting the learning process on the AppleTV (since the help page doesn't expand on this)...
Normal: Up, Down, Left, Right, Play/Select, Menu
Advanced: Play, Pause, Stop, Rewind, Fast Forward, Chapter -, Chapter +, Skip Back, Skip Ahead
I'm not entirely sure how the Play/Pause button on the original 7-function remote relates to the separate Play/Select, Play, and Pause functions.

Any codes for letters or numbers? A circular argument could be made about this. The Apple TV does not respond to any letter or number codes. Therefore it doesn't matter whether there are letter or number codes. Or There are no letter or number codes for the Apple TV. Therefore it doesn't matter whether there are letter or number codes. Perhaps we can assign a name to a class of codes like this. The codes have these characteristics: each code could, could have, or might, or might have, some use with products other than the products they are associated with. It is not known whether the codes' IR analogs produce any result of any type when a device that normally responds to IR codes is exposed to these. There being no interest in these codes, and no means of doing anything with them, we shall henceforth refer to them as Schrödinger's codes. By the way, the so-called Schrödinger's cat idea was not invented to explain a mind-bending result of applied quantum mechanics. Instead, it was invented to point out that some facets of quantum mechanics, at the time the "cat" was invented, were such that the really stupid idea (the cat) was supported by quantum theory.

It will be cheaper to just add a Roku and not have all the headaches (the reboots!) required by Apple TV. We simply stopped installing them (unless absolutely requested, but able to convince MOST its not worth it).
