Question, I would like to mount a volume controller outside on the deck. The volume controller that I'm using hits the back of every single gang outdoor box that I tried at Lowes. I'm using the following volume controller, Audioplex VC200DIOPT 200W. Also, the code calls for a see thru cover, I forget the exact name. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

AudioPlex also makes an outdoor cover for that VC.

Water Resistant Covers:
WP3703 for Single Gang and WP1020 for dual gang
WaterProof covers:
WTG100-CV for Single Gang and WTG200-CV for Dual

Aero Try an extension ring for the box. It may save you the time of getting the audioplex in. I have used the standard box with ext. and various outdoor covers for years. You are still a little tight but it will work..

If he's worried about Codes, what you describe is not within code. Electrical boxes (Whether or not they have real 120V electrical in them) cannot be mouted exposed outside.

Not so. There are all kinds of outdoor installations. Look at above-ground pools, receptacles, lighting, etc. As long as the enclosures are rated for outdoor use, and installed properly, they're okay to use. I've used weatherproof-while-in-use boxes for both line-voltage and low-voltage applications, even fan-speed controls.

Now, I'm no electrician, but I have not seen sealed box that takes a standard extension ring.... Certainly not one might find at Lowes...

So are you saying a standard electrical box with Counduit Knock outs can be mounted out in the elements with 120V power in them?

Keep in mind that I'm in chicago where we have some of the toughest residential electrical codes in the country, but I cant begin to think that would meet any kind of electrical code.... of course, It still amazes me when I see romex run thoughout a new construction when I;m working over the Indiana border....

No, I'm saying that weatherproof boxes may be used outdoors with 120V power in them. There must be gaskets between mating surfaces if the construction doesn't provide rain-tightness.

so Larry is there an outdoor extension ring? I need something like this. I have lighting and outlets in my backyard and the first outlet is GFCI and it is too darn cramped in a standard box and an extra inch or so would be perfect. I never even thought of an extension ring. let me know.
also another quick question for you, that same GFCI pops after about 4 hours and I have to reset it and sometimes it takes like three or four resets before it stays on and then it will pop again a few hours later. Is this most likely a bad GFCI or a short somewhere down the line. I don't think it could be overloaded. it has some low-voltage scenery lighting plugged to it, to 40w lights, and a 14 light xmas light strand. oh and a small fountain pump.

Eric, to start at the end, my bet is the fountain pump is the culprit. Use a process of elimination, and unplug one item at a time, and see which one is causing the pop.

Of course, testing with nothing at all plugged in will determine if the GFCI receptacle itself is malfunctioning. If water gets in the box, it could trip, too.

By the way, a short would trip the breaker, not the GFCI.

There are extension rings for flush-mounted one- and two-gang boxes. I'll have to go on a safari and see if I can find plastic ones. Are you using FS-type boxes?

Okay, my first search found this site. Check out page 47 for the extension rings, and page 48 for gaskets, in case you don't have enough. Each mating requires one.

On p. 47, item #3651 is the single-gang extension ring, which adds 1" of depth. On p. 48, gasket #37932 in figure no. 6 (which shows the different configs the same gasket can be used for) is the single-gang gasket.

Here's another one: click here, scroll down and and click on "Weatherproof boxes".

thats exactly what I need thanks.
As for FS type box, I'm not sure what that is. I hav ethe case aluminum boxes with seals. The stuff at Home Depot.

Does home depot or Lowes usually carry the extension rings?

There are metal outdoor boxes here in CA in all the OSH and Home Despots. The boxes are aluminum castings and only come in gray. They have a metal 1" extension that comes with a gasket. It looks klugey but it works.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Lowes or Homedepot in my area don't carry them. I went to an electrical place and purchased them. It was $7 for the box and $7 for the extension. I thought the prices were a bit much, but I didn't want to wait. I bet I'll wait the next time.

Niles has a VC already in a box, it doesn't need a cover.
