I have been an installer for a little over 3 years and now I have moved to a new city and I'm going to school. There are no respectable installation companies where I live so I figured I could start doing some installs for part-time work. I dont want to start a company or anything but I would like to have some consistent work. Has any of you one-man-show guys found any secrets to keeping busy and finding new work.Anything would help please!!!

I got my start by developing relationships with CircuitCity salespersons. At the time CC had no installation service and if the customer returned the product the salesperson would lose all their commission. I did a good installation that kept their product out, saved their commission, and left me with clients that referred me to their friends. Now I only work for people who have been sent to me from previous clients.
One problem I see with your plan is you say you dont want to start a company. Does that mean that you plan to do installations without a license, insurance, etc. If thats the case I would say move to a bigger city and work for someone else who has a legitimate business or get a job at the Dairy Queen.
It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever.

Network like crazy. Decide what geographical area you want to cover, type up some brochures about what services you will over and hit the streers. I would start with new housing developments. Just walk into the construction trailer and talk to the super. Ask for contact info at the main office. Bring donuts or breakfast buritos, you'll probably end up with more business than you can handle. Also, do make sure you have all the proper insurance, etc. One bad incident can put you out of business for good. If I were you I would also start a business plan and update continually. Something about having a plan on paper helps keep you on track. Good luck.
How hard can this be?

Networking is the way to go. Meet as many people as possible, and promote yourself to be likable and friendly you will be suprised how far that will take you. And just be honest about your cababillities
