I am doing an install in a new theatre, and am looking for recommendations for in-wall speaker locations. The room is about 22' 9" deep by 18' wide. There is a soffit about 1' deep in the front of the room the extends back about 6'. The speakers are 6" in-walls. And I am going to be pre-wiring for a 7.1 system. Thanks for your reply.

First of all, there are a bunch of unanswered questions here.
1. What kind of inwalls?? 6" inceiling/wall speakers rarely ever come with a box of any quality. Without a box, the speakers will sound like crap.

2. Are you using them in all speaker positions??

3. Where is the room. Inwalls with good boxes placed in different walls will sound different. If one wall is an outboard wall with Insulation and the other is an inboard wall that has a large open room next door will sould drastically different.

4. Then there comes the issue of NOT being able to aim the speakers at the listener on the mains, and bouncing them away from the listener on the surrounds.

The whole idea with a 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 system is that the listener is immersed in a diffuse sound field in the rear, and a localized sound from the mains. It is a fine line between totally difuse and being able to tell where that sound in the rear came from that you want to avoid.

I could go on and on and on, but my advise is 1, if you are in the wiring stage, prewire for 7.1 in the future, and 2 go with 5.1 now with better speakers. You will be a lot happier.

E-mail me if you want and I will talk to you more.

Ron,
Well, we haven't completely decided on which brand. We're looking at Legend, or possibly Klipsch or Jamo. The fronts are in wall, the sides and rear will probably be ceiling.
The room is in the basement. Two of the walls are exterior and the others are interior. All will get insulation around them.
And thanks again
Paul

Paul, if you have access to them, B & W inwalls are DYNAMITE! You should give them a listen. (I do not sell them) Also there are a few software programs that will help you to set up speaker placement. I'll try to get a link for you.

Just my 2 cents.
Happy hunting!

Sonance makes several very high quality in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, check their web page. The Virtuoso832 in the front LCR are great and then you can use the RS2 for the in-ceilin surrounds. This will make an incredible system that you will be proud to show your friends
