I would like to hear any comment on both the Zenith CRT's and Phillips LCD's I have a customer that is considering both... This room is a windowless theater with a 161" HD screen. What Draper screen would you be using? I don't need to use the AT1200 in this case. The Zenith would be the PRO1200 the Philips would be the PXG10 each have very different pro's and cons and prices as well. Either would be used with Faroudja processor... What are you thinking.. Any input is to share with the buyer I already have my opinions, but am backing them up with others if possible.

I don't think either projector would produce enough light output for an acceptable contrast ratio on a 161" screen, regardless of screen choice.

Unless you're using an extremely bright projector, or multiple projectors, I think that size screen is entirely too large.

Can you provide some more info on the room that this system would be installed in? Size? Seating distance? client's expectations?

Sure thing. I am leaning towards bringing the screen size down as well. I just want the customer to agree that it's the right thing to do as well. There are four rows planned from way to close up to 24 feet to the farthest eyeball. Th seats are to be IrwinMarquee so the seating width should afford a higher gain screen, but i haven't done the numbers yet. The front outside seats will suffer just a bit. With this choice. If the screen size were to drop a foot or two allong the bottom what would you think about that? I have only seen the PRO900X and didn't check out the 1200 at cedia much less what they were projecting on. The rom will be quite dark.. Flat black ceiling with Fiber stars, and rather deep colors used for wall and floor. All Light will be Quite controlled as the room is a Concrete vault all the way arround. What would you say about the JVC DLA-M4000 model that's out there.. 4000ansi and only $60,000.. That's quite a step up or stacking a couple of DLA-M15U's.. stacking.. 1500ansi each... Only 18,000 each.. ..What to do.. Ok.. then there are all of the other guys out there.. What might you do.. If I can Talk Him away from these brands?.. I'm rambling.. it's late.

I have always liked the zenith pro900, if it is done right it can have a awsome picture if you tweek it. The problem I see is your distance. The 1200 is supose to be brighter with better color and contrast. I also like the jvc unit, but would recomend the stewart greyhalk screen for the dla, but this brings a question into mind. Where are your speakers, behind the screen? If this is so then drapers woven screen has better accustical sound but you loose the incredable blacks you can get with the greyhalk. If money is no issue look at the barko projectors for your distance.

How close is the nearest seat to the screen?

How high is the ceiling?

Do you plan to implement seating risers? If so, what are the dimensions of each section? (platform, rise)

There are a long list of questions that could be asked here. First thing to keep in mind though, other than great performance and asthetics, what does the client want? Have you done a client profile yet?

What aspects of the job is most important to them? Big picture, marginal quality? Best performance? Bragging rights?

Just some questions that come to mind.

The seat are on one foot risers The ceiling in the front of the room is 11'might end up being a bit more. I'm proposing to use Genelec Speakers up front just below the screen, and Genelec in walls around the room (4 sides 2 rears) Money is a bit of an issue, but if the quality level will be so much beter then they might be persuaded. I will not be using an accousticly tranparent screen for this one, and will be looking for a mid gain screen. The front row is just over 6'. I don't recomend it, but they want maximum seating and don't mind.
I would like to know more about the Stewart greyhalk.. Can you give me a link?..

Have you considered the big sony vpl90 projector? This is a killer projector that should be considered. We've had great luck with them in the past, and with a faroudja or snell&wilcox yields a result nothing short of breathtaking. With its 9" guns and high light output, it is an appropriate match for a large screen. With the JVC D-ILA 4000 projector, keep in mind that bulb life is only about 1000 hours, and hte bulbs are about $1000.
