I have a Harmon Kardon PA 4000 amp. Under normal circumstances I would have had cat 5 wire run to an on/off/volume wall switch in each of 4 locations. Unfortunately I didn't have the amp when the house wiring was going in. To retrofit the house is out of the question. So my question is this - is there any way I can setup this amp to turn on the various channels, raise and lower the volume etc via remote. The best I can come up with is hard wiring four of the standard HK wall volume controls to a panel near the amp and then coming up with some type of remote that will control each of the four channel's functionality.

So my questions are:

1. Is there a remote out there that will learn the HK keypad commands?

2. Is there a remote out there that will allow me to do this times 4?

3. Is there an easier way? And if so hints would be appreciated.

I assume your looking for a RF solution?

For a Speaker Level control solution.

Well, depending onRange Issues, the Xantech RAT-1 is fully addressable to something like 68 code sets or something along those lines. Use a TSU-3000 or RC-5200 with a RF extender and lern in 4 separate Xantech RC68+ RAT Codesets and viola. 4 independant Volume on/off Mute commands.

You can do what your Describing by using 4 philips RF Gateways w/ one Remote, just assign a different RF Chnnel for each Keypad.

A RTI-T2 w/ RF interface will give you 6 disccrete Control Channels as well.

Jeff,

The "keypads" are merely three contact closure buttons, there is no IR control of the amplifier. RF would not work either (there is a knockout for an IR receiver; however, it is used for source control and is completey independent of the keypad control). There is also some simple logic built into the amplifier for zone on/off status and IR output control of HK recievier/zone 2 power only.

You would need to actuate the contact closures to get any operation from the amplifier. In that case, the keypads would be redundant since you could wire directly into the amplifier.

We have used this amplifer alot; just don't try to make it do more than it was designed to do. Think of it as an AudioAccess PX600 system using only KP3's. NO source control just on off and volume per zone.

I posted a lengthy and detailed response that apparently hyperspaced. Anyway, Rob's got it right, and if you want to do this via IR, I suggest using two Xantech CC62 IR-controlled relays to provide the 12 necessary contact closures for all four zones (3 per zone: On/Off, Vol+, Vol-). I would favor this solution over that proposed by Impaqt, for it is not only cheaper (though still pricey), but will turn the amp on/off as needed.

Good luck.
