I have a problem trying to program B&K Multi zone units. I cant get my laptop to connect to the unit. No matter what I try, letting the B&K software scan the com ports for the B&K or manually configuring the software, I cant get it to connect. My laptop doesn't have a serial port so I am using a Belkin USB to serial adapter connected to the B&K serial to cat adapter. I called B&K and they were no help. I use the USB to serial adapter to program the B&K keypads, and Elan systems. Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have the right com port selected in the communication setup? I've also done a factory reset once when this happened to me. You can also try to connect with the Hardware quick tool.

Yep, I have the correct comm port selected. And I even tried having the BK software scan all ports.

When you say a factory reset, do you mean reseting the BK piece with the quick tools?

Assuming Windows XP, go to the control panel, system, hardware, device manager, click on the plus sign beside the listing for ports, right-click on your usb-serial adapter and select properties. In the port settings tab, make sure it's set for 9600,8,none,1, no flow control. Click the "advanced" button on that tab and make sure that the port number is no higher than 4 You can change the port number there - the B&K software stops scanning at port 4 (I think.)

If you still can't connect, try unplugging the CT for a few minutes.

I've found that the communication on the CT's can get a little flaky if it's even moderately warm. (In fact, the CT on the whole is pretty heat sensitive - great machines, but they don't like the heat.)

(edited - sorry, I didn't see your reply about the com port being correct. It came up while I was typing my reply. I type slow!)

Ive tried multiple cat 5 cables. And last time I tried and couldnt connect one of the other guys took the same cable and connected with an older Dell that has a serial port built in.

Do you think a PCMCIA serial card would work better? I was wondering if the USB adapter was the problem. I know Elan systems have problems with some USB to serial adapters.

I connect to them all the time, but I use a PCMCIA serial card. All USB to serial adapters are implemented via software on the USB side and therefore conflicts can and do arise. PCMCIA cards are a physical hardware port to the computer and not subject to a USB software driver. I use the Quatech SSPR-100 card.

You say you can connect to a B&K keypad from your machine. There are two differences here - the B&K software for the CT and the serial to ethernet adapter. Check the second carefully, I have found broken or incorrect wiring inside these adapters.

B&K said there is a big difference in connecting to the CT and connect to the keypads. I have to admit I didnt quite understand why this would be, but whatever. Today I lost my Belkin USB adapter so I was thinking maybe just to replace it with a PCMCIA card any way.

Hi All:
I am having a similar problem. I can communicate with a CT600 RS232 port from a Windows XP- based system, using a serial port on XP-based computer, but when I try to communicate with a Windows 7- based computer via a usb to parallel converter, I can't establish any communications with the CT600? I can successfully communicate with CK 1.2 keypads using either computer. Any help getting the CT600 to communicate via the usb to serial port would be appreciated, since I would like to use this same interface to connect with a laptop computer in the field.
Thanks,
Gary

I am using the Prolitic USB-to-Serial Com Port (ebay special?). Windows 7 recognized the converter OK and the dirver install seemed to come off without a hitch. The install set it up on COM 3. I ordered a different converter a few day ago, but haven't received it yet. I don't really expect the new one to behave much different however. It just seems that BDcSuite is more limited than the keypad editors when trying to set up the serial interface? It either seems to find it automatically, as happens with my Windows XP based computer with standard serial I/O, but the auto detect mode doesn't get it connected in the
Windows 7 based system and I don't seem to have any options to find out what is going on? As I also mentioned in my previous post, the keypad editors interface and work OK through the USB-to-Serial port.

The keypads were built by URC, and the editor is their software. Alot of guys, myself included, use IOGear's USB to Serial adaptor with great success. I have a few CT600.1 and 3s out there, and have no trouble updating them. However, I'm running Vista on my laptop.

Just a quick update and my Thanks!
I received an IOGEAR GUC232A USB to Serial RS232 Adapter that was recommended and it works great on my Windows 7 based system. I purchased it from Amazon.com.
Thanks Again,
Gary
