I have a job in about 3 months which will require a 42" Plasma. I've decided on Fujitsu but should I use an HD(1024x1024)set or the 852x480 model. The signal source will be an HD cable box with most channels in analog. The HD plasmas I have seen look worse with analog cable signals than analog crt sets do. The other difference in the sets is a 500:1 contrast ratio on the HD unit but a 1500:1 ratio on the cheaper model. The lower resolution model also is 40% brighter. Has anyone seen these models with analog cable or will there be no difference except when viewing an HD source? Will a Farouda scaler improve the crummy cable pix?

The 1024x1024 panel is still NOT HD. It is an interlaced 512x512. These sets look great when HD is fed to them but really need to work hard to get a good Analog picture (Faroudja or Runco VHD do help a bit)

new hi-res panel is now rated at 1000:1 contrast ratio... You may bew looking at the old 424x model.

Just keep in mind the ever present Plasma/IR demon. He tends to raise his head more often with the
Fuji's.

My personal favorites are the Panasonic plasmas. They definitely have the best black levels and color detail. As far as HDTV vs EDTV, we had on display the Panasonic PT-42PD3-P (which is 852x480) next to the PT-42PHD4-P (native 1024x768). Running an analog or non-HD digital signal, the EDTV looks much smoother. Switching over to an HDTV signal, the PT-42PD3-P still looks brighter and more colorful. The loss in HD detail is not noticeable unless you're really up close analyzing sharpness of the images.

Overall, I feel the EDTV set is a better deal, at a much better price point than it's HDTV brother. It reproduces HDTV scaled, but with extraordinary quality.

As far as the IR problem, we use plasma-safe IR repeater systems by AudioPlex. They really work great, no problems with interference to this point.

Actually a 1024x1024 alis panel is true HD, it is the only resolution that does not scale 1080i. it just clips 54 pixels out of the picture. All other resolution hd plasma's scale to 780p. So depending on your source(i.e. an HDTV sat box at 1080i) and as you stated if you have a video processor like a Faroudja the alis panel could look really great. The new alis panels have very high contrast as you stated, though most manuafactures do not give numbers.

We find the fulitsu to have have the worst ir issue as well. If you guys put a nec 42" next to any of these other screens you'll sell nothing but nec. We installed over a hundred plasma last year and we and our customers like th enec's best.

I havent seen a Consumer NEC Labled panel in over a Year.... Are you taking about brands that use NEC Glass or are you installing commertial units in residential jobs? The lack of sheilding on most commertial units really plays havoc with IR, I would recomend against that no matter how good you think the picture looks.

I don't think the IR problem with fujitsu will be a problem, I'll be using a prontopro, only the plasma is being controlled by IR, all other components are in an adjoining room.
