Had a client ask me by text last night, "Hey, would you guys mind if we paid some of our invoice with Home Depot gift cards? They're just as good as cash and we have tons of them!"

Uhhh, no thank you.

I didn't use HD gift cards to purchase all your gear. I don't pay my employees with HD GC's either.

WTF???

Be careful, those cards aren’t always good. I think some have expiration dates. Also, a popular scam is to steal products from a store then return the items for gift cards. The stores have started canceling cards issued for returns if not used quickly.

Ha, I promptly responded with cash, check or credit card.

It was just unbelievable that they would even ask that!

Yeah, it’s too bad too. My friend that has the pawnshop did a lot of home improvement projects on Lowe’s cards he bought for fifty cents on the dollar. LOL

If it was charged, they will refund to the card. Otherwise, it really depends on the location and employee. I've had some refuse, and others that simple gave cash back.

They are, as a rule, taking a harder line on returns, as it was a huge problem.

They will all crack down, just as Costco eventually did after people returned $10,000 projection TVs like 5-10 years later, bought a $1000 plasma to replace, and laughed as they put the other $9k back in the back.

Laptops were actually the cause of the policy change. Costco did an analysis and found that there were thousands of people who had returned “defective” laptops between 1 and 3 years old multiple times. Because of the nature of PC issues (“it locks up”, “its really slow”, etc), Costco had no way to call bullshit on it without hiring a “computer tech” for every location. TVs could always be plugged in by just about anybody and verified if they worked or not, so the number of people actually shitty enough to try the “return policy upgrade” was very low.

It was that they would issue store credit on gift cards. I don’t know now. If you have a MyLowes card so they can look up your purchases, they will refund the item in whatever form you paid. But without that and without a receipt, I think they have stopped taking returns

That's it now.

Receipt or purchase made within, I believe 60 days, that a MyLowe's or CC allows for them to track the item, or you're SOL.

After what I think is 60 days, the new policy is no refunds at all.

Another quirk is that if you buy the "Contractor Pack", you can only return a contractor pack, since that's what shows up in tracking. Buy a pack of 10, you cannot return a partial amount.
