Another Christmas Miracle Brought To You By Controllable Power Products

I just got an "URGENT" email. The subject was actually "URGENT" :). I got up to let my dog out at 9AM and read the email.

"None of the iPads are controlling the system. We would like to have music going today for Christmas".

I assume the issue is the network or the crestron processor. I send the client a follow up email at 9:05 asking "check to see if you can access the internet with the study iMac (so i can verify the network and internet is working) and try one of the handheld remotes in any room (to verify if the crestron system is online).

By 9:10 i have my laptop fired up and i am already connected to the clients rack PC. I run an IP scan and find that the crestron processor is offline. I access the controllable power strip in the processors rack and cycle power.

By 9:30 the processor is back online, the system is working and the client is happy. I am in Chicago today sitting in my PJs handling a service call on the east coast. 30 minutes from the first "URGENT" email to the last "WE ARE BACK ONLINE THANKS SO MUCH" reply.

I would like to thank the following for making this magic happen:

Windows 7, Internet Explorer & The Internet!
Dell PC (mounted in rack)
TeamViewer (remote login software)
Middle Atlantic controllable RackLink power strip
My dog Nelle (for waking up right when she did! Good Job, Nelle!)

As much as I like VPN, I'm finding all the more reason to put in a rack PC with Teamviewer/LogMeIN instead. This plus BlueBolt will become standard on our installations going forward. In a situation like yours, it's hard to say "but you had a limited budget so we cut out the things that would rescue you on a very important entertaining day". It's funny that those entertaining days also happen to be good referral days as well. Hope you get a few thanks to your expedient service!

My guess (wild @ss guess) is that its because we added the iPads last week. Maybe i had an old version of software when i uploaded or i had current software but forgot to load firmware to something. Maybe i forgot to set a static IP on one of the iPads or maybe i set the static IP in the DHCP range. Who knows. Its on the System Troubleshooting list. If it fails again i will dig a little deeper. If it doesn't i will chalk it up as one of the perks of being an integrator :).

Actually happened Thursday.

Flew from Greensboro, after not making connections on Wednesday, to Panama City, Panama.

Arrived at the hotel (Sheraton Convention Center) around midnight Thursday. I just hung around the hotel pool, ate breakfast, lunch & dinner with the wife, who had to work all day (8am to 8pm).

Today was mostly lazing around to let her catch up.

Tomorrow we play "turistas" when we go to the Miraflores locks....

Thanks to Blue Bolt I have fixed a few systems sitting on my couch watching my own TV. A couple times now I have logged in and fixed things via my phone on the slopes.

Sorry brother, that totally sucks.

FWIW, I buy most of my stuff on Amazon....they have tons of stuff available, and with 2 day Prime shipping, you should be back up and running in no time. One big invoice to (hopefully) submit to the insurance and get it reimbursed.

Some people have posted pics of their tool bags emptied on here (OEX and Stamp come to mind) if you want a quick and easy reference as you're trying to remember all the tools you need to replace.

Good luck!

It looks like my dumb ass forgot to lock the vehicle. They nicely went in and took my bag with all my hand tools and took my large Milwaukee bag with my entire set of Milwaukee ish.

Already began ordering new stuff. Over a grand just on hand tools so far. Went ahead and did some tool upgrades :) new veto pro PAC and a nicer toner etc....
