i have a large armoire with a receiver/dvd/vcr/tape under the tv. i have seen a remote that allows you to keep the doors closed by using an infrared eye and a universal remote. does anyone know what i am talking about and where i can research it on the internet? thanks.

Well, it's a combination of stuff.

Probably a Xantech, www.xantech.com Ir repeating system.

Along with some type of learning IR remote control. If you don't want to spend the money on the IR repeating system, you could go with a Pronto Pro and use RF coms to the gear.

For the minimalist, you can control up to six components with original or aftermarket remotes with the Hot Link Pro repeater. I installed one for a customer who loves hers.

I second the Hot Link Pro nomination. I've used them in a number of installations with great success in combination with an MX-700. The receiver eye has incredible sensitivity. You can also get accessories to increase the number of components controlled.

How is this when near a plasma? I have a system with a flaky IR repeater; the Xantech pickup just sits there flashing, no matter where I put it, even several feet away from the plasma.

I do not get clearly from the illustrations: does the IR sensor only pick up signals from its side, so it has to be mounted the long way (sidewys on the surface), or can you bore a hole from the back of a cabinet and slip it in so that only about a 3/8" hole shows?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Try using the audioplex plasmaproof stealth eye. It will clear up the constantly flashing xantech eye near the plasma. The constant flash is caused by the plasma giving of to much emi. Non plasma proof eyes cant deal with it and it can sometimes cause a lock up of the ir system.
