I have an Onkyo TX-DS898 Receiver that is putting out some sort of morse code type of interference only in the rear surround sound speakers when you select the DVD mode(DVD not playing anything). It doesnt affect the front, center, or sub. Ive tried unplugging the speakers and it stops,so I suspect the receiver. When I unplug the other components from it (DVD player, VCR, Satellite) it continues to emit the dit-dit,dit-dit type of noise. Ive even plugged the receiver up to another recepticle to see if it were wiring interference with no luck in stopping the noise. Anyone had any trouble with the circitry in a receiver to cause this type of problem

I had a similar noise problem in a receiver, and it turned out to be a bad IC in the receiver. It also only occurred in a particular set of surround modes, not all of them and not in stereo.

While your description seems to pin the problem down, there are still some variables to weed out so you can locate the problem.

I don't know your particular receiver, so some of this may not apply, but --

Does this noise come through both surround speakers? Always?
Check the surround mode that your receiver is in when you switch to DVD, and check this mode with other inputs as well. Also check to see if the noise occurs when you have the inputs switched to analog, or to DTS, or whatever...

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Don't underestimate the importance of what may be happening here. It sounds as though a time/space anomaly may have occured and a fissure has opened and someone from the past is trying to communicate with you.

Connect a morse code generator to your receiver and ask them what year it is.

p.s. Be careful of what you tell them or you may change history dramatically.

A run of ICs that a source supplied to Onkyo did not meet specs and cause that sort of problem. We've fixed a bunch.
The unfortunate thing is Onkyo gets the bad press when the supplier goofs.

For research on the ticking problem, go to Home Theater Spot to the Onkyo forum. There are HUGE threads on this problem, including part numbers to replace the problem IC. Onkyo is aware of this problem and should make it right. This affected mainly the 898 and 797 models.
