A client has a Pioneer Elite 610 HDTV. Playing through a Progressive Scan DVD looks great but the picture output is limited by the TV to the "Full Mode". This is fine for playing DVD's, but the client also wants improve the picture quality of cable/SAT and vcr. I'm thinking a line doubler or scaler.
The Problem: The doubler or scaler outputs are (for the most part) either 480p or 1080i, the source material aspect ratio is 4:3, the TV limits the output mode to "Full Mode" this would tend to horizontally stretch the image thus making the appearce of peoples faces look wide and distorted.
The Question: Is there a "work around" or "bypass" through the TV? Is there a video scaler that may have video processing that could overcome the TV's "Full Mode"?

Check the scaler's features. The scalers we use have aspect ratio controls, just like the TV would have.
Letterbox, anamorphic, 4x3

A scaler usually dosen't increase resolution of a picture, it just makes say a composite source displayable on a XGA monitor. It does not make the composite source look like an XGA signal.
