Guys,
In order to get the local channels, you must first set the dish setup correctly. That means oval 2 lnb/3lnb then call Directv and tell them your missing the locals. a simple hit will do the trick, but the receivers must all be set to the correct dish setup. If you don't have an oval dish you need to find a better job......

Actually, Thom, locals are on the same sat here (101). I only have a round dish w/a dual LNB. If you started at the top of this thread, you'd see that I never lost locals on two of my receivers.

We appreciate the input, but you really should read threads top to bottom so your posts are in line with the rest of the thread. Besides, I have no HD receivers at this time, so I don't need an oval dish, or for that matter, a better job.

Well, you're both partly correct. There are a couple places with locals on 119. And Thom, Larry did solve his problem already.

Larry,
The rate change went into effect in November or before. So if you are new to Tivo since then, you'll only see the $4.99 amount. That is down from 9.99, and much better than standalone Tivo owners who pay 12.99. The other rate changes are somewhere on their website. I am on the emailing list so I got a copy in a newsletter from D*. Basically, everything went up a bit except for the Total Choice Plus w/locals, which stayed at $39.99. Easily their best deal, esp now with the new rates on other stuff. The next lower down option is only $1 less. A worthwhile dollar for over a dozen channels.

It's always the electricians that have the problems. Larry, maybe you need to remind yourself that when you don't connect the equipment properly, it won't work properly. More time on low voltage will give you a better edge. Good thing you bought warranties!!
PS wait till YOU hire an amateur!!!!!

Hey Thom,
Lighten up. You haven't been registered long enough to be that caustic.

Anybody know if DSS receivers NOT in TiVo units act this way?

I am working with an installer who wants to take any working shortcut, and he insists that only one receiver needs to be connected to a phone line in any given system.

He tells me that he does not know why, but all the receivers will be okay if one is connected to the phone line; it is (to me) like some kind of voodoo is going to communicate from one receiver to another, instead of each calling to DirecTV.

I have seen receivers turned off by DirecTV when not calling back for months, but that was quite a while ago.

what is the straight poop today?

Ernie
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

All receivers need to be connected to phone lines. DirecTV likes to make sure extra units are still in their original locations and haven't been resold to your next door neighbors.

Yep. It may look fine for awhile, but eventually Direct seems to get around to checking this. They have been known to shut down parts of packages, etc. for those who don't have all receivers attached to phone lines.

Spiky, only the non-phone-hooked-up (!) receivers dropped the locals, so I'd guess the receivers themselves did it. Besides, TiVo features (recording, dual-tuning, etc.) will stop after 30 days of no completed calls.

Otherwise, the receivers worked fine, including the last-30-minutes-backup. None of them were plugged in for several months, due to laziness. I never heard a peep about not plugging them all in.

One more thing that needs the phone line is PPV. PPV data is stored in the individual receiver, I believe, and transmitted via phone line. All of them need to be hooked up to use PPV properly. Obviously, this only affects you if you use PPV.

Larry,
I've never not had mine hooked up, so I've no personal experience. But I've read comments from people who lost PPV ability or lost all programming or just their premium packages. It sounds like yours might have been a software thing more than Direct coming after you.

Right. Being DirecTiVos, they must complete a call at most 30 days since the last one, or the TiVo functions stop working.
