I'm sure this topic has been broached several times before, but now it's my turn.

My wife has finally given me the go-ahead to get a new TV (woot!). I've had my Pronto (TSU2000) for about a year now, and have realized the advantage of having discrete codes for the different devices. Is there a brand (or even a specific model) that is "better" at having discrete codes than others??

If it helps any, I'm in the market for a 36" HDTV-ready set. I think I've narrowed it down to either Toshiba, Panasonic, or Sony. The only reservations I have are with the Sony. As good as the set is, it may conflict with the "All Devices Off" discrete code that I use for my Sony DVD player. Any advice would be appreciated!

THe Sony is your best bet. Panasonic second, and Toshiba third. Your ALL OFF problems should not be a problem as there are specfic DVD OFF codes you can switch to.

SONY-FULL DISCRETE CODESET AVAILABLE
PANASOCIN TAU- Discrete Power, Inputs through CH+, input, input, input)
TOSHIBA- I think new Cinema ceries has discretes, but in the past, there were no power discretes and Input switching was marginal at best.

I think my Sony DVD is old enough that the only discrete "OFF" it understands is the "System Off" command. But, if I understand it correctly, it looks like Sony TVs have their own discrete on/off codes (at least, that's what it looks like in the Pronto File area).

Too bad the Sony also happens to be the most expensive out of all of them :). Guess I'll have to track down my cousin (electronic store employee, wink wink).

Zzed, Many Sony DVD players will turn on if the play button is pressed. If yours is of that type, just include a DVD play command prior to the DVD power command for a reliable off sequence.

Most Sony TV sets have On and Off commands available.

Zzed before you by check out the Loewe tv's. We use to sell Sony but dropped them for Loewe. The Loewe has discrete codes and you can find them on this site.

sony is good but panasonics is best. panasonic has all the codes you need. few week ago i had to go through the same thing, but i end with toshiba, cause of the service menu and convergence menu. there is so much you can do with it, but all that stuff is not for user. thoshiba has no discrete power codes, but i was able make it with a current sensing device. not a big problem. if you'll go to shop where you can see sony and panasonic playing at same time with same source you'll be able to decide it better. good luck

The Toshiba Cinema series has discreet on and off, input selection is by video followed by 1,2,3,4 or 5

Many panasonic tv's don't have discrete sleep commands... That is enough to keep me from installing another....
We can do it my way, or we can do it my way while I yell. The choice is yours.

I have used the Panasonic 36HX42 on several occasions and it has worked very well for the price. It does have discrete commands for input 1, input 2, input 3, component 1, component 2, power on, and power off, I have used all of these commands on several occasions and they all work great.

I agree with avgenius1, Loewe TVs are pretty cool and have an interesting design. They feel a bit like having a Bang & Olufsen but at much less money.

So much nicer than having a common Sony or Panasonic - or am I just being a snob?
