Hi,

I am having a very strange problem I'm hoping someone can shed some light on. I have installed a HT system with a Yamaha RX-V1 receiver, and the appropriate accompanying Yamaha CD changer and DVD changer. Each component has remote in/out jacks in the back. It is/was my understanding that one could plug a remote IR Eye into these ports for a hidden installation type scenario. At any rate, this is what I have done. I ran the output of my remote eye (output of the powered connecting block) into the "remote in" port on the receiver, then daisy chained out of the receiver, into the CD changer, out of the CD changer, into the DVD changer. I should also perhaps mention that the DVD and CD changers are both plugged in (AC power) to the "switched" plugs on the back of the receiver. Now - here's where the weirdness begins. If the system is powered off and I hit the "power on" switch on the remote, everything turns on. I can then control both the CD and DVD changers without problem. I can switch sources on the receiver. What puzzles me is that I cannot control volume on the receiver, and I can't turn the receiver off. Aside from these two (very important) features, everything else seems to work. Any ideas as to what's going on here? Thanks!

Sometimes non-stipped carrier IR into the inputs of a receiver etc can work in strange ways. I recommend looking into the Xantech interface specific to your product.

www.xantech.com

you'll want to look at the model 794-00 or 797-00 product.

I'm a Yamaha dealer I would just get a xantech block and a bunch of mimi to mini cables and plug them in separately into the block, I'm sure you'll be fine. If you need help email me at [email protected].

Make sure none of the gear is within remote shot along with the Receiver eye. I have had lots of yamahas in the past that if they got the signal through a repeater AND direct from the remote, they would get confused and not respond to Volume in particular.

Thanks for the replies, guys. After some careful review of the manual, it looks like the remote input jacks in the back are only set up to control volume to the zone 2 output... Yamaha must be of the opinion that their equipment is so beautiful that nobody would ever want to put it out of direct line-of-sight! Anyway, I have a call in to Yamaha cust. service to see if there's a mod to route around this "feature", but so far it looks like the problem is/was a design flaw vs. operator error. Thanks!

why don't you just install IR emitters?

Hi again -
After a conversation with Yamaha tech support, it would seem that the labelling on the back panel is actually counter-intuitive. There is a "remote 2" input - which actually controls zone 1. "Remote 1" will only control zone 2. Go figure. Thanks to all who responded!!

P.S. - McNasty - the reason I avoid installing IR emitters (in general) is for cleanliness of the install. Nothing like 6 months down the road when the glue fails and they come unstuck from the front of the chassis, leaving residue all over the place! Thanks for the response, though!

I understand that, but you could open the reciever and mount the flasher inside. No ugly look and no residue to be seen.
