I am having trouble programming a Kustom KHS6D controller with a Kustom 6640 to control a Hughes GXCEBOTD Tivo/Directv receiver. The KHS6D lights up green to show that that it has learned the Tivo remote codes, but will not control the Tivo. I can control the Tivo via the remote through the IR receiver on the KHS6D (although it is somewhat intermittent). I have tried using a Xantech emitter in place of the Kustom emitter, but no luck. The KHS6D successfully learned the codes from a Pioneer Elite VSX49TX receiver, a Sony DVD player, a Denon laserdisc player (which uses Pioneer codes) and a Sony VCR.

Any thoughts?

have had some problems with thi sequpment passing i/r control functions. to date i have had no problem with the mits sat equip. ( which is made by hughes), however, i have had the same problem with the rca ultimate tv unit. tech guy at custom told me that the rca i/r units function at a frequency that is higher than standard (48.56khz, as opposed to the more standard 48.38khz.) there is a trim pot adjustment inside the unit on the rear left as you look at it from the front. the install manual is "WRONG" so in contrast turning the trimmer "counter clockwise" will increase the i/r peak upward. with this being said, i have been totally unsuccesful at get this to pass any i/r control signals no matter what. tech "expert" at kustom has no clue. i have found that using a channel plus cable i/r dist. system will pass signal. extra $300. to do what the unit should do anyway. learn function key same way as i/r signals. i suspect that the rca and the hughes ultimate systems share this design. thats where i am at with it.....todd

The carrier frequency for RCA is usually lower than "standard" equipment, about 27kHz. I haven't checked a UTV unit, but the code set is shared by the rest of the RCA DBS product line.

Thanks for the input.

FYI, the Hughes Tivo receiver is not built by Hughes but is marketed by them. It is essentially identical to the Philips DTivo, so experience with other Hughes Sat receivers probably will not help. I understand the IR frequency of the DTivo is a pretty standard 38KHZ (although I will note that I read one probably incorrect post on the AVS Tivo Forum that indicated a Xantech rep thought it was actually 56KHZ) so I am at a loss as to why I am having any code learning problems.

After speaking with Kustom customer service, I tried adjusting the trim pot on the Kustom unit and it did not help. I have tried Xantech emitters, Niles high and low power emitters and Kustom emitters and all work (or do not work) about the same. A really odd thing is if I use the Tivo remote and point it directly at one of the Kustom keypads/IR repeaters, it works maybe 40% to 50% of the time. But, if I point the remote away from the IR receiver and, say, bounce it off a nearby wall, it is virtually 100%.

This is all very frustrating. I had no problem using a Marantz RC2000MKII with the Tivo (which learned the Tivo IR codes easily) and I also have no problems using the Tivo with a Niles IR repeater system. Oh well. If anyone has any great ideas, let me know.

JUST IN CASE MAKE SURE YOUR KEYPADS ARE CURRENT. ORIGINAL SHIPMENTS SHIPPED WITH KEYPAD PROBLEMS . CHECK FOR JUMPERS ON THE BACK. ALSO NEVER TRY TO LEARN A TOSHIBA 65 VCR IN, IT WILL LOCK UP ALL KEYPADS.

Mike:

What am I looking for when you ask me to "check for jumpers on the back?"
