What's the largest home anyone has done. What systems? My company is bidding on a 22,000 sq, Footer. I just wanted to know if anyone had any input.

Thanks

147,000 sq. Ft. in Las Vegas
90,000 sq. Ft. in Las Vegas
65,000 sq. Ft. in Conneticut

I would rather do 20 smaller jobs than these 3 monsters.

Thanks

Have taken over a 17,000 that another company had prewired and semi-installed. We were lucky that everything was well labeled. Figure that you may be working on this home for years after the install with potential upgrades. DOCUMENT everything! That is one of the smartest things to remember.
Crestron is great stuff, Lutron(?).... I would certainly prefer Vantage. It is much better.
We are just starting a 26,000 and it has to be prewired by someone else... union.

I'm a bit curious of how you manage a ultra large home like this;

for audio distribution do you have only one mecanical room ? do you split the systems not to have to long home runs, what about sources? are they individual or sharred ? where do you put them?

Sounds like you need a consultant! I think that every system is a unique one and tough to generalize anything. If the pockets are deep enough, I prefer a centralized control room for the theater and common areas. For bedrooms and such, having an additional processor with their own source material. With systems like Crestron or AMX, you can have them all communicate with each other to do special multi tasks as needed. The key is to find out your customers' expectations.

I'm always curious why Lutron seems to get a bad wrap on the boards. I've looked at the two product lines and in the RF line, the Vantage is 900mHz and the Lutron uses a 418mHz band. It would seem to me that on that point alone I would want to go with the Lutron, knowing my chances are greatly reduced of interference. I think that I would just like to hear more in depth the reason that Vantage is better...price?...interfacing with control systems?...customer support?

2 50k+ sq ft and 1 27k. All three systems used AMX, but only 2 used Lutron.

The main drawback to Lutron on a large project is it's limited to 32 devices. There are ways to kludge around this, but it gets messy and expensive. I would prefer to use LiteTouch, but this requires a great deal of planning. I've personally done a 15K sq ft house in Vail. I use Crestron teamed with an Arrakis CD juke box. It turned out great. The Arrakis allows people to randomly select 1 of 6 different CD "players" so you can have different music playing all over the house.
How hard can this be?

The 32 device limitation only applies to RadioRa. You can use Homeserve or Homeworks Interactive for a larger system.

It is always interesting to see people's opinions when discussing equipment and technology. Lutron is a good complany as with Vantage and Lightouch. It really comes down to the business side and your market... who has what etc... and of course your capability. That is the real question! Are you capable of delivery or are you going to create a monster that you cannot control?

Do not forget the first interview is for your benefit also. Feel them out carefully!
Who else is bidding? etc....

W-W-W What!? We are talking single family, indoor living spaces right? At that size they no longer qualify as "homes" they are complexes or estates! I hardly think the largest home in America, at 175,000 sq ft.- The Biltmore Estate -would be considered a "home". It is used as a hotel.
After 20,000 sq ft (A very large home) all standard methods of wiring have to be reconsidered entirely as an almost commercial or even industrial application.

41,000 when built. After a few years they(home owner) decided it was too large and remodeled it to cut out about 8,000 or so.

When you just have too much money you can do things like that I guess !
