I think I'll be killing the necessity for serial control with careful purchasing and programming. That's a great idea for protecting remotes, I'll bring it up at the next discussion.

One of my big questions is: Do we purchase cheap stuff (DVDp, remote, etc.) and not worry too much, or buy expensive stuff and spend more to secure it as well as possible. We'll see what the powers that be desire.

We have just completed a similar project with your exact goals in mind.

The remote model was the the Harmony Remote SST-748 (retails for approx 199) Dealer cost is obviously less.

The solution was for a locked up system that could not get messed with by a guest. Programming time was about 3 hours to delete unnecessary menus/items and test.

The Harmony can only be programmed through USB and there is no risk of loosing programming since it has non-volitile flash memory.

The SST makes the macros unnecessary and provides a help button if anything gets out of sync.

Pretty cost/time efficient solution.

I once saw a TSU2000 that was secured to the charger base, which was secured to a coffee table. That would deter an undetermined theif. Nothing to accidently leave in their pocket. And if you use an TS1000 and charger, less than $160 + programming. Can't beat that!
I do custom programming over the internet for the Pronto family of remotes.
