Where have you guys found the best position for rear effect speakers. Have a rectangle room. Rear projection one end, lounge the other. I have the effect speakers on the side walls about one to two foot above the ears. Should they be this height or at ear level. AND for that matter should they indeed be on the rear walls!!
Prolly a simple question. Will contribute when I can.
Cheers,
Gonz.

In the rear, but for what I gather you don't have room for the speakers to be in the rear, so you could situate those 2 speakers at the rear corners of the rectangular shaped room facing towards the lounge if the set up allows you to do that. As for the effect speakers, usually manufacturers recommend at ear's level, but 1 or 2 feet above is fine.

Sorry to disagree Mr. T but, Russ Hershelman (sp?)one of the premier home theater designers in our industry places the surrounds on the side walls. Just a thought.

Thanks guys,
might have my terminology mixed up. My effect speakers are the rears. Sorry. Have room on the rear walls (the lounge is as wide as the room) however they would be behind the head. I could put them in the corners.
Sounds like a conflict of preferences, so, could it be just a personal taste thing?

If your mounting these or not, keep them at least 18" out of the corner.

here's my 2 cents, I have done much research on this very topic and I used to have mine on the back wall (parallel to the listeners) and aimed directly at them. They were as close to the ceiling as I could get them and about 6 inches off the adjacent wall. I went to dolby's website and they reccomend puting them about two feet above earlevel and about a foot behind the listener aiming the speakers at each other. The only way I could do this is to move my couch forward about a foot and it made a great difference. They are still high and close to the adjacent wall but they are pointed at each other and the sound is 10 times better, more enveloping. One day I may bring them down but I don't feel like buying another 100' of speaker wire.
The point of this is to mimic the recording soundstage that the soundtracks are mixed in so you hear it as it was intended. Of course I do claim this to be the holy grail, but it works for me.
