Anyone have a good supplier for an attractive projection port window for residential application? We would be using them in Home Theaters and other rooms where we locate the projector behind a wall at the back of the room. Sound isolation and good video quality should be considered.

Thanks!

When we have done this in the past, we had the carpentermake a frame and then went to the local glass shop and picked up some optical glass, put it in and brad nailed the frame in place. Make sure it is optical glass and not regular glass because regular will skew your color a bit.

How does one identify/know if it is optical glass that they sell to you? I am sure many glass shops know nothing about optical glass and just make up a piece of window glass. Is there an identifying label/mark to look for?

As a disclaimer I know little to nothing about glass.

The guy at our glass shop knew exactly what we were talking about. He did have to order but it only took a few days. As far as differentation, I don't think it is anything obvious, it's more the production process that is used. If I remember it is not glazed or coated and has very little oxygen in it to create the bubbles(microscopic).

You can buy premade windows for this purpose. Google "theater porthole", Kelmar, or Goldberg Brothers. I think the premade ones were around $500 that came with a metal surround. That compared to $50 for a piece of the glass and being able to match the decorative millwork of the theater made the decision to make our own frame.

Is that a real Diamond or Cubic Zirconia???

In Australia and probably the USA it's called Starfire Glass, which has little or no lead content giving it a clear appearance, as appose to regular glass which has a greenish colour especially when looking at the edges.

I'm just completing a job where we've put the projector behind a 16x9 ratio port hole and will be installing a piece of Starfire Glass in a purpose built surround where the glass can be removed for cleaning. The glass sits at about 15 degrees off vertical in order stop reflection back into the lens.

The higher quality the glass, the less colour distortion and light loss.

If the projector doesn't have motorised zoom and focus, you will need some way of seeing the projected image while setting up either by installing a viewing port hole, using a video camera / monitor setup or help from someone in the theatre while you're in the projection room.

Thanks for the response. Some of the pre-made ports I've seen have glass doors you can open to clean; and adjust the projector. Any other suggestions for ports or glass sources?

I've used the following from Edmund Optics and it worked perfectly for a projector window:

This source has been recommended many times in the past for this application.

Dino,

Thanks for the info. I think we will order this and give it a try using our own construction for trim.
