Ok so why is it that we can't use a center channel as an L/C/R and on around.
For the sake of cabinet size I'd like to use a center speaker for all 7 channels.
Seems I remember this being a no no, and I just don't recall.
Please enlighten me,
Thanks,
CMack

Actually, it's not a bad idea, or a new one. By center, I assume you're referring to a d'Appolito design: one tweeter flanked by two woofers. My CLR-2000 center is perfectly suited to use as mains.

The only real "no-no" is that this type of speaker, because of its dispersion pattern, is best oriented vertically, and most people lay them down. Also, they're almost always 'mono-polar' (front-firing only).

Also, most manufacturers' center channel speakers are inferior to their mains lineup. There are some noteable exceptions. (B&W LCR600, Monitor Gold Ref Center, etc...) Most always must have a sub or 2 with these setups... you can't use a pair of large mains and bass management like you typically could. d'Appolito does have some phase issues, but for theater, seems to be inconsequential... in fact, I'd rather have the bass reinforcement from a couple of drivers to get some dynamic range over a non-existent imaging decay problem. Especiallly since you are going to be placing these speakers in a cabinet, there should be no appreciable difference between an LCR and a traditional monitor in sound quality.

With the center channel being the most used and demanded speaker, seems it would be adequate for mains and certainly surrounds.
I understand that mains are probably "better" because of stereo. But if you think about it, why is it you can use a center as a main but not a main as a center.
Yes it's been done but I don't think it supposed to be. I never have.
Anyway it's this reasoning that leads me to believe using a center channel on all 7 channels would have to be acceptable.
By the way, Looking at using PSB stratus gold for this room.
And yes, I'll put 2 subs in, 10 & 12. I don't like 15's.

The d'Appolito design has worked well for me as three front speakers.

There was a company called NEAR that made some really incredible speakers and the had a model called the M20 and the MV20. Probably the best sounding d'Appolito design speakers I've ever heard.
