Daniel,

Will the entries be judged using the simulator? I would imagine that is the only way to see all of the pages and the flow of the interface.

I noticed any sounds added to the program don't play while using the simulator, is there a way to enable this?

Thanks

I don't know about sounds; I'll ask the team (next week). When the contest is over there will be a page of instructions for RC members on how to properly judge files.

How to submit sounds with your contest entry:

Please note that WAV sound files are not embedded in your XCF file. In order to include them with your entry please zip up your custom created sound files from the ProntoEdit Professional SOUNDS subdirectory (normally C:\Program Files\Philips\ProntoEdit Professional\Sounds\) and include them as a separate file with your submission.

Any submitted sound files should be user created and not copied from elsewhere on the Internet (due to copyright restrictions).

Yep, really busy with it!
Couple of questions though:
1 I have the same problem playing sounds with the simulator, so I hope you can help us out soon!
2 What is the maximum size of an xcf file?
3 Are we allowed to use the buttons (icons) for the channels, like BBC, Discovery, etc or do we have to create those ourselves as well? (Guess those are copyrighted)

Getting back to work now!

1. Alas, as it turns out sounds cannot (currently?) be played through the emulator. This of course makes it somewhat difficult to test how they would work.

2. I'm not completely sure, but unless you hit some sort of wall I wouldn't worry about it.

3. For the purposes of the contest I would say that as long as any graphic surrounding the logo was done by yourself you will be fine (ie. don't download "stock" logo buttons done by someone else) .

If you want to create your own logo's there is a free download at www.guifx.com called LogoTools. It will automatically convert standard white background chanel icons into a collection of gloss white or gloss black icons.

I while ago, I wrote a script to convert logos similarly to the gloss black look. I offered them for free download for a while but it was too hard to keep up with changes in channel line ups. When they decided to create the LogoTools program, I supplied them with the (black) gloss overlay so any new icons created would match the collections that a lot of people already had.

The gloss white is pretty sweet too. As long as you are not creating channel icons and charging money for people to use them, there is no problem according to many of the legal statements I have read regarding the use of network identities and their logos.

Daniel can correct me if I am wrong about this.

To me, creating your own unique collection of logos is not only time consuming, but when new ones need to be made, no one can do it without the original layered Photoshop file in most cases. Using something like LogoTools makes it easy to update your collection basically forever.

Just a thought to help you out.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" for the heads up on the free download of LogoTools. Looking forward to creating my own logos with it.

Bad news. When I try to run the application, the setup displays the "The dotNet Framework v1.1 is not installed. Please install it and try again."

Any suggestions?

You need to install it. :-) Should be available via Windows Update under optional updates.

Just to follow up ...

It's a pretty sweet program, easy-to-use (once I got it installed :-p), making or changing TV or Radio logos is a snap (it's so nice to stay current). The logos have a quality look. Best part is, it's free :-) I would highly recommend it to others who are image-editor challenged to give it a look see.

Personally, I think the logos are just as good compared to what Philip's TSU9600 is offering in their TV & Radio gallery. Two thumbs up to GuiFX.

I see no point in trying to design a fabulous interface with page fades, wipe transitions and twirling buttons when I can NOT manipulate, in any way, the layout or look of the 200 devices...Oops I meant the TWO devices that are "supported" in this editor. If, as everyone wants, Philips expands this "feature" will they also be designing those interfaces as well? Might as well start selling Harmony.

I forgot to ask what happened to Room/Scene 11-15. Can I not control those at all or do I need to create another device for these?

Hi Daniel,

I was wondering if you know how many screenshots you will show for each contest design. I remember the MX-3000 contest entries had three screenshots.

Thanks so much

Noel
