Hello,

Long time pronto user, but never got into the Pro models because they were out of my price range when they were new and I remember something about the software being hard to use or hard to get at some point in time for the end user.

I'm using a TSU7000 and I have a spare, and I was just messing with it yesterday updating some things. I wanted to look around on this forum to see what was still active and it looks like there's some activity in this forum.

Still nothing seems to be out there that's as nice as a pronto, but it seems like these can be had on ebay and like.

I found some new old stock on a TSU 9800 but that looks too large to use for a normal remote. Some of the TSU 9600's I'm seeing look to be in questionable condition and still selling for a pretty high price.

Anyone know where I might find one in good condition or if I should even bother now? Programming easy if I can manage the NG software on the TSU7000?

Thanks in advance!
Luke

For me the TSU9400 is the perfect replacement for my previous Prontos. (I had UK versions of the TSU3000 then upgraded to the 7000 and 7500 before the 9400 I have now)

Version 1.1 of Prontoeditpro is very similar to using the old NG pronto software, it does everything I need so I stuck with it, I do keep meaning to sort out my IR database and upgrade to 2 or 3 but the newer versions are a lot different so I haven't yet.

Thanks for the response. I may try to keep my eyes open for a nice TSU9400 or TSU9600.

If anyone has any extra's they would want to part with feel free to contact me.

Thanks,
Luke

I have a saved search on ebay for the tsu9600 and the tsu9800. You can sometimes find used 9600's for $100 to $125. 9800's are pretty rare, and more expensive. Both have a 640 x 480 display, so one program can run on either remote. Be sure you get the charging dock and the wall wart! The remote does NOT charge over the usb port!

When you compare PEP1 and PEP2, they do the same things, but are arranged on the screen differently. PEP2 does have a database to deal with.

PEP2 does have issues with installing on newer Windows versions. Usually you can work it out. Sometimes the install stalls out, and you have to stop the ProntoDataServices to continue the install. Then you restart it when you run the program.

Prontos are really best suited, in my opinion, for IR control, either directly or with an extender. Although they can do IP control, you have to do the programming yourself at a basic level, using Prontoscript. (Based on Javascript.) Unless you have experience with sockets, http protocols, networking, etc., the water gets deep pretty fast. You could start with IR to learn the basics and add in IP later.

PEP2 will also have trouble downloading to the remote if you have a Logitech wireless mouse or keyboard. It's a Windows thing. Some people have a virtual xp machine in their pc and run PEP in that. Another approach would be an old laptop that runs xp.

There are a number of people on the forum that are very knowledgable and will help you. Lyndell is very knowedgable, and always seems to be around.

The tsu9800 is 8 3/4" wide by 5 1/2" tall, about the size of an iPad Mini but thicker. It is fairly heavy. 2 - 3 pounds?

Agreed, I did want to get my 9400 doing some smart home stuff but a bit of lateral thinking led me towards home assistant running on a raspberry pi, I have a FLIRC attached to the pi with an emitter from my extender, a single IR code from the Pronto can execute complicated automations with any device supported by home assistant.

I have been using TSU9600 for years and years, since they first came out. I have 4 of them now. Last week I stumbled across a brand new TSU9800 on eBay and snapped it up for a very cheap price. It arrived today, everything included as per new plus two spare batteries. I've never seen a 9800 in the flesh before and I was surprised how big and weighty it actually is. The other thing is the screen has the same resolution as the 9600, but being a much larger size the fidelity of the image isn't as sharp and crisp as the 9600. I haven't played with PEP2 for probably 5+ years so I was a bit hazy trying to remember how to program it. Downloaded the firmware from RemoteCentral and uploaded it to the panel, easy. Here is my new 9800 next to a 9600 so you can see the relative sizes....oh well, I tried to post a pic here but it didn't work.

Thanks for the replies. I did see some new old stock 9800's on ebay and I thought about getting one but I was concerned about the size of it.

I picked up a 9600 off of facebook marketplace cheap, and he didn't respond for a few days, so I ended up grabbing another 9600 from ebay. Then the guy from facebook responded so I have 2 of them coming.

I really just plan to use it for IR in place of my tsu7000, just nice to have a little upgrade.

I relegated control of my lights over to google home which kind of sucks, but works pretty easily.

I did kind of wonder if there was any way to have the pronto trigger events in IFTTT. If that were the case it would work quite well to bridge the gap between google home and the pronto.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions after I mess with it for a bit.

Thanks!

If interested in doing JavaScript programming, google for PDF on Javascript by David Flanagan 6th edition. Read the first 10 chapters only, maybe even Chapter 12 as well. Then apply that knowledge using the Javascript API extensions known as ProntoScript - There's a PDF DEV guide available in the files section.

I don't recommend PEP3 for starting, I'd stick with latest PEP2.4 and use the latest firmware on remote and any extender.

Learning Javascript will allow you to do some cool things like sliding toolbars, along web access via TCP/IP or UDP. However, if you only want a remote for IR control using a plain-jane user interface, scripting may not be for you.

Might be over my head, but i will definitely make a note of it. I typically have grand ideas of what I want to do then end up short on time.

Hopefully some of the knowledge of the tsu7000 will carry over.

Thanks for the help!

Your knowledge of TSU7000 will definitely carry over to PEP1.

Well I have 2 TSU9600's now, one of them I ordered a battery but the other one works.

I've ran into my first problems before I have even attempted to learn the software.

On my laptop I've installed PEP2 and it seems to have installed fine, but I can't communicate with the remote. It's a couple of years old Windows 10 with a single usb A port. I get error C14 HID Attributes with no other devices hooked up to it. I've rebooted the remote, and tried it through the docking station with the same results.

I have a VMware install of windows XP on here that I installed for my TSU7000 so I installed PEP2 on that and I also can not communicate with the remote, so I think it might be hardware.

My desktop computer I wasn't able to sucessfully install PEP2, as it's hanging on the install, but it did install enough to open and test the communication and it works fine.

I've read that usb3 ports can be problematic, any newish knowledge on some of these problems? I've searched the forums but a lot of the info looks to be pretty dated.

I'm intimidated by putting together a complete setup from scratch as it's been years since I did anything like that, but I want to get my laptop working somehow first.

Thanks in advance for any help
Luke

Update: I was being stupid

I didn't have the remote connected to the VM, it was still connected to the host. It now works in the XP VMware install.

So far I'm really glad I got one of these even though I'm barely scraping the surface of it's potential.

I'm just using it with IR only, but I've learned a quite a bit so far.

Thanks for all of the info this forum has in it.
