Try the Discrete Power On as well.

With regard to learning the commands, at one point the learned >| button worked as 'Home'. They broke that in the 14.6 release I think.

I picked up the latest remote for ATV and also found that a quick touch of the enter pad will show you current time vs run time for a program. I have not found a solution via IR commands above for that as of yet.

But if you have an application such as HBO Max that offers >>| for 'Skip', you can do a quick tap of the Select command above and it should skip.

Yes, the discrete Power On looks to be useful (I use Menu now, but acts as back button if Apple TV is already on).

So, I've got an Apple TV 4K 2021. When adding the commands to my Pronto, do I use Device 229 or 238?

thanks.

I used the Device 229 commands in my Pronto TSU9400, except I used the following Device 238 commands since they weren't available under Device 229: Menu, Video Resolution, Play_Pause.

Some comments:

1. The Menu command (Device 238) doesn't work for me. It doesn't do anything. I'm going from TSU9400->RFX9600->Xantech (optically)->Apple TV in case it matters. I haven't tried direct IR from TSU9400 to Apple TV yet.

2. Aside: Apple's latest 2021 remote (correctly) refers to the old "Menu" button as the back button (should have been called the back button years ago).

3. As Lyndel mentioned, I also haven't found any apps that use Channel Up/Down (I'm in US).

4. Device 229 Discrete pause doesn't work with all apps. For example, it doesn't work with Youtube TV.

5. Forward and Reverse also doesn't work with all apps. For greater reliability (so as to be consistent across all apps and minimize confusion with users of the remote), I just use Cursor Left and Cursor Right, which also works as rewind and forward even from a playing state.

6. I taught my Apple TV commands from an old unused Dune remote. The learned discrete pause (and discrete play) button works in the apps that I tried (including Youtube TV). For some strange reason, the device 229 discrete pause button works with some of my apps but not in other apps (like Youtube TV). However, the learned pause button works in all the apps that I've tried.

7. Note that the following commands can be taught to the Apple TV (these are not available in the Device 229 commands provided above):
Next and Prev (behaves like Track -/+, IIRC with Music app),
Stop. Granted, these buttons don't see to be that commonly used.

Anyway, I use a combination of the Device 229 and Dune commands that I taught my Apple TV. I especially love the discrete power on and off commands that Lyndel provided, as well as the control center command (apparently, you can also teach the Apple TV a control center command, but it won't work unless you also give it a 1 sec duration). I actually find it useful to have a control center button, since I have HomeKit automation that I can access more easily.

Interesting that MENU 238 Function 001 (0x01) does not work. I'm using it with TVOS 15.X

UPDATE 20220304 - Tested Channel Up/Down with Apple Music Library in US and these commands change the track on TVOS 15+.

While testing the above and listening to music with Apple Music Library, I pressed UNKNOWN_A and the unit appeared to accept this as some way to control volume and asked me if I wanted to configure the Volume Control. However, I was only able to see this one time. I cannot find a way to reproduce this after this one time. :-(

I'm on TVOS 15.3 (latest as of today). Yeah, not sure why Menu doesn't work for me. I am going through an RFX9600 and a Xantech connecting block, in case it makes a difference (should not, but once in a blue moon, it does). Anyway, for now, I'm using a Dune IR Menu command that I taught my Apple TV.

Anyway, thanks for the IR codes. The Power On, Power Off, and Control Center commands are especially useful!

I have most of my IR equipment on a non-powered Xantech connector block running off of IR Port 2 of an RFX9600 with power output at normal level. However, the ATV is connected directly to RFX9600 Port 1 using a dual IR emitter. No issues with Menu at all.

Hey Lyndel,

I was adding your macro commands (Command Center, Browse Apps, and Kill App), and I couldn’t get them to work. Then I compared your Home command data to mine, and they were similar, but not identical. I think I may have learned the codes from my Siri remote. I speculate that the learned codes were not perfect copies of the original codes, with slight timing differences.

Anyway, I replaced my codes with yours, and the macros now work perfectly. The discrete power on and power off are also a welcome addition to my remote.

Thanks for sharing your hard work!

The siri remote, I thought, was Bluetooth only so curious as to how you were able to learn the Home command. Either way, these are very clean codes and should do pretty much anything you want.

Update: I just tried learning IR from the Silver Siri Remote (2021) and as I expected, it does not transmit any IR except when enabled to control external volume. So, not sure where you got your codes but I'm doubtful they were learned from a silver remote. I did not try with the Gen1 Siri Remote - Black with glasstop) but I doubt that would have worked either.

This Menu command works for me! The Menu command from the September 5, 2021 post doesn't work for me. I have the Apple TV 4K 2022.

I reviewed 238_001_MENU from the Sept 5, 2021 post and determined that it was same code as in 229_037. As of 20240422 I have corrected that code.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Thanks for the codes. Earlier, except for the Power On & Off commands that you provided, I was using mostly IR codes from an old Dune remote that I taught my Apple TV. Although the "teach Apple TV" functionality seemed to allow you to teach more commands than what is typically available in an OEM Apple TV remote, those additional commands are largely not used by apps. Anyway, I decided to revisit my remote's Apple TV commands and I converted my remote to use all your commands,. I was pleasantly surprised that the later posting of the Menu button worked. Using your codes is preferable, so I wouldn't have to teach future Apple TVs any codes (assuming that future Apple TVs use the same codes, at least). And, haven't timed them, but they seem subjectively quicker.
