I've recently upgraded to a pair of pronto pro 9400 remotes. I've stuck with PEP 1.1 as it's familiar to me and continued using the RFX9400 extender in a similar manner to the way I used extenders with my older Pronto remotes (connected directly to the remote in ad-hoc mode, no network or internet connectivity)

I've just bought a 3rd remote and a second RFX9400 extender on eBay. Can I continue to use an ad-hoc connection or do I need switch to using them connected to the network.

Yes you can! You put both extenders on the same channel (1-3) so that they share the same adhoc network. Then, you assign different unique extender id for each extenders (0-F) so that the Prontos can address extenders individually.

Note that PEP2.4 support adhoc (standalone) mode just like the PEP1 versions did. The only difference is migration to use MyDatabase which Peter Dewildt put up a sticky post on how to do this years ago.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. It's taken that long for them to arrive from a seller on Ebay but finally I got the new remote and extender today.

I've got everything working perfectly in standalone mode.

I did have a problem with one of my functions which would crash one of my remotes (but not the other 2 with the same configuration) Turned out this particular function was labelled as a legacy code and looked different, that code worked fine using the devices IR emitter but not with the extender. All sorted now though.

Welcome to the Pro Remote World.

One thing I will caution about. The Page Up/Down button switches on the side of the remote can come unsoldered easily if you drop the remote on its side or it was badly treated during shipment. I personally blame the packaging from philips which does not have a cutout where those buttons are. The switches are SMD soldered and can break loose from the board in these conditions. However, a simple reheat with soldering iron will fix it right up provided you know how to take the unit apart.

You must be a mind reader, of my 3 remotes the page buttons work perfectly on 1, not at all on another and only the up key works on the 3rd.

I've made my configuration to work around this but may very well look at fixing it at some point. (it goes on the list along with sorting my code database properly as a task for the future)

I've had 2 of the 9400 for a couple of months now and I have to say other than battery life the 9400 is practically everything I want in a remote, couldn't be happier with them. My most recent 3rd remote and 2nd Rfx9400 cost me 30 UKP (which included £10 postage) which has to be the bargain of the year for me.

Philips sent me a 9400 for testing. I got one that had the screen filter inverted so the viewing angle was off. They sent me another unit in exchange and that one had the page button issue. I immediately opened it up and reheated the solder joint. I used it for testing PEP2 only as I did not like the feel of the unit (but I loved the metal wheel).

Too bad they disabled scripting on the 9300 as I really like that form factor. :-(

The other thing about the 9400 is no speaker so you only get beeps and cannot use Sound files.

The Lithium batteries in these remotes like to stay charged. I keep my 9600's on the dock usually. Over the years, I think I've had to replace 3-4 batteries.

I take it that there would be no problems with using the same extender ID for several ones? I want to start using some extenders for lighting and will only need one port per location, and sometimes be using the same codes for several sites (some lights are always on together). This way I can put all the light IR codes under one part of My Database.

When the remote uses an extender, it reserves it with an allocate command.

When the pronto executes and ActionList (from start to finish even across page jumps) all extenders specified by Actions in the ActionList are allocated for the duration of the execution. So, if you have multiple Prontos using 1 or more 'shared' extenders, you could get 'Extender Already In Use' popups when you try to do something on remotes at the same time. This is why Philips recommended that extenders be dedicated to rooms/remotes.

I personally use a shared extender for 1 purpose, to control lights in the house. I don't use it for multi-zone receivers for example because it is too problematic.

Best of luck.

OK - I only use one remote at a time, so hopefully it'll work - if not I'll just have to work around.

Cheers.

If using only 1 remote at 1 time, you should be fine. :-)

Mine are in stand-alone mode, and don't seem to like using the same ID at the extender end. No matter, all dealt with by a few tweaks of PEP.

Turning lights on and off feels disproportionately satisfying, and no wondering whether Alexa will hear you properly or require silence in order to hear you at all - both problems I've seen elsewhere in the (too) early-adopters' World of Voice Control!
