Hi -

PEP3 had been working fine on my PC about 4 months ago on my Win10 (x64) v1703 PC.

I recently upgraded to Win10 v1709, and I think it may have messed something up with the PEP3 drivers.

Now, when I try to download a configuration to my TSU9600, PEP3 has a hard crash.

Is anybody else seeing this? Is there a fix?

Thanks,

Alan D.

As a test, I used my Wayback Machine to go back to Win10 v1703. PEP3 worked perfectly again.

When I reloaded last night's PC image of Win10 v1709, PEP3 crashes every time when downloading again.

Is anybody else using PEP3 on recent Win10 v1709 PCs? (If you type "ver" in a CMD prompt, you'll see something like: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.248])

Hi, cosmicvoid - No, I hadn't heard about the Win10-1709 USB issues. It's probably the cause (or, at least related). The "Pronto Control Panel" does show up in my Device List when I connect the TSU-9600.

Unfortunately, KB4090913 didn't fix the problem. PEP3 still crashes when I try to download to the remote.

I really appreciate the help, tho! I'll be hunting for USB-related fixes.

Thanks,

Alan

If it's any help - my TSU9800 is running fine with Win10-1709 and PEP3.
A few days ago I had a temporary issue where the device was not being recognized by PEP3 - I could solve this by turning the TSU off and on again using the bottom power switch.

Thanks, Sebastian - I tried your suggestion, but unfortunately that didn't work either. I'm stumped.

For the short term, I have a Virtual Machine running Win10x64 v1703 which is recognizing the TSU-9600. It's not optimal, but it allows me to get by for now.

Thanks,

Alan

I had problems with Windows 10 along the way (TSU-9800 here), I gave in, grab VMware player (there is a free version, I think 12). Create a VM of Windows 7 X32, and install everything on there. Or built into Windows 10 pro, there is Hyper-V, this does the same thing (I like VMware because of the portability)

Then you can back it up, be portable and upgrade to any version of Windows 10 with out a problem. All my programs for my remote are on a WIndows 7 VM, Photo editor, Pep2 and Pep3, all my config files.

When I am ready to work on it, load up my VM, kick off full screen and I am on Windows 7 working on the VM (and yes, USB will pass to the VM)

Yeah, I have a Win10 VM (Older version of Win10) that has updates disabled. I can use PEP3 working fine with the VM.

It's just unfortunate that I have to use a VM (again!) to reprogram my remote.

I hope that this gets fixed someday by M$, but I guess I should stop holding my breath.

I'm turning blue ...

Is it possible to install Windows XP on a virtual machine in Win 10? Will Microsoft refuse to allow XP to be authorized because it's not supported any longer?

Hi, Dawn - If you are referring to the built-in "Virtual PC / XP Mode" that came with Win7 Professional/Enterprise, than yes: XP Mode is explicitly blocked in Win10.

You would need to look at alternate Virtual Machine options, like Virtual Box (https://www.virtualbox.org/). You can run VBox on Win10 (the Host), and then create a new Virtual Machine that will boot and install WinXP (the Client).

With VBox (or VMWare Workstation), you can run isolated instances of another O/S on your main PC. There are integration capabilities that will allow the Pronto on a USB port become visible to the Virtual Machine Client O/S.

Thanks Alan.

Unfortunately I want to run XP on a Windows 10 Surface laptop, so I will have to take a look at the other alternatives you mentioned.

I just installed a more recent Windows 10 update (v1803), and the PEP3 still crashes when downloading to my TSU-9600.

At this point, I would expect that PEP3 (or, possibly the TSU-9600) to be permanently incompatible with all future versions of Windows 10.

I suspect that PEP3 has a deprecated function call to the USB interface, since the TSU-9600 is still recognized in the Win10 Device Manager, and the TSU-9600 can successfully operate with a previous Win10 version Virtual Machine.

Is it possible to get the source code for PEP3 to see if this can be fixed?

Source code is not available. I wish it were. You actually need more than one piece of source code as the communication DLL coded with C++ and PEP3 with C#.

Thanks for the info, Lyndel - I wish it were available, too. I would have dusted off my C++ coder cap.
