I am running the most recent firmware, but every now and again, the Pronto will just change the TV channel on its own. it can be very annoying.

This happen to anyone else?

Any clue why this happens -- and how to stop it?

thanks

How do you know it's your Pronto changing the TV channel on its own? Also, is it the channel on your actual TV changing, i.e. tuner built in to the TV or are you talking about the channel on your cable box or satellite receiver changing on its own? It's far more likely that your cable box or satellite receiver is changing the channel on its own if you are using one.

because the Pronto will wake from sleep when it happens. plus if I turn off the Pronto it never happens.

And it is changing the TV channel on the uverse cable box.

Very interesting. Can you tell us more about your configuration file? Do you have ProntoScript running in the background at regular intervals? When the channel changes, is it changing to the same channel each time?

I don't know how the "page up/down" codes for the U Verse box work. But on Dish, the page up/down codes function as a channel up/down code as well.

If you had programed the page up/down codes into the little dial around the 5-way cursor. Then it's possible that your problem lays there. You may have to remove the page up/down from the dial and put them at a different button location.

Definitely sounds like someone programmed IR codes into the Scroll/Jog wheel, a feature that was added with PEP2 or PEP3, I forget which.

If I were a betting man I'd say the 9600 in question has the plastic scroll wheel and not the metal one. My first 9600, the one Philips provided me eventually started waking from sleep on its own and would do so at repeated intervals until I reset the remote. (Experienced the same issue with other 9600's that had the plastic scroll wheel, but never with the updated hardware revision, the ones with the metal scroll wheel.) I also for a time had the scroll wheel while on my main menu page set to navigate and highlight a given activity and when the remote would wake from sleep due to this issue where no activity had been highlighted prior I would see that one was highlighted all the sudden.

You guys are the best.

Indeed it has the plastic scroll wheel (early adopter).

it does wake from sleep all on its own.

and I did program the page up and page down on the scroll wheels. it was added in PEP 3 I think.

there are no pronto scripts running -- it is a very simple setup.

I will try deleting that and see what happens.

Appreciate all the help.

Take care,
George

That should certainly do it. I can remember how frustrating that issue was to deal with per the remote waking from sleep on its own due to the scroll wheel being detected as having been moved even though it hadn't, the scroll wheel by design (...or by oversight as like to think of it) set to wake the remote from sleep when moved and even in cases where there isn't anything programmed to it. Of course if you do have something programmed to the scroll wheel not only is it waking up the remote, but it may also send a command if enough movement is detected, albeit false movement in this case. My first 9600 was plagued with this issue and would exhibit it every once in a while at random with long breaks in between, but more times than not once it happened it would get stuck in a loop, every so many seconds like clockwork the remote waking from sleep again. It would do this over and over and over again until I reset the remote. My only solution was to rest the remote face down next to me on the couch when I was using it as a way to ignore the stupid screen constantly waking up. Since then I've only ever used the 9600's with the metal scroll wheel which don't present the issue.

You know it's really a shame the Pronto line was discontinued, because the Pronto Team at the very least could have added a "Settings\Screen\Activate Panel" option for the scroll wheel that way customers experiencing the issue could at least set the scroll wheel to not activate the screen. In turn one could leave the remote on a page where the scroll wheel wasn't programmed to do anything preventing commands from being sent on their own. Would have at least made the issue easier to live with. In fact, I recommended such a settings option to the Pronto Team as it would have been a nice option to have regardless considering the option was already there for both the firm and cursor keys. Sadly it never came to be.

Yep, it will go for weeks without waking the remote and then do it 3 times in a row. I figured it was simply the remote losing the network and then waking to find it.

Is there any issue with setting commands on the hard buttons in the wheel?

As a test, I would recommend using ProntoScript to do this. Use Activity.onWake and then wait for 2 executions of onScroll where the value for click parameter is non-zero as a test.

Only after this condition is met, would you issue scheduleActions or executeActions on a widget. You will use Activity.onSleep() to clear your variable that was set to 'true' upon the 2 executions of a non-zero click value.

George,

This may not work as I might expect as the onWake() may depend on the screen lighting up. Is definitely worth a try. If you run into issues/questions trying to test, drop me a note at Yahoo please.
