I bought RFX 9400 and TSU 9600 online from different sources.

How can I determine which firmware version is installed on each component or which updates have been made?

Run a search for "how do i check firmware". That will find hits discussing how to tell what firmware version you have for sure on the remote. You can also download latest firmware from files area and when you connect your remote to the computer and then run the firmware updater EXE, it will tell you what version you have.

The manual for the RFX can be found in the files area. You use either a cross-connect cable or a straight cable connected to the router. You can then run the 'Extender Discovery Tool' from the PC (requires PEP1, PEP2, or PEP3) and it should find the extender once you flip the switch on back from a '1' to '2' or '3' depending on which type of cable you connected.

In the Extender Discovery Tool, you must click/double-click on the extender located and you should be able to open a web browser window at this time. The firmware version is on the web page you view.

Lyndel, you are awesome: Not only with your knowledge but also with your quick reply!

Following your lead I discovered that I own an older TSU9600 (not the backup I just bought on line) with the application 4.0.17 and the firmware 2.1.25.1 and a bootloader 1.2.8.
My recent addition lists as application 7.3.3 and an IR firmware 4.0.20 with a bootloader 1.2.8.

This information is confusing me, because I was under the impression that the info under application describes the firmware that requires PEP/96 v1.1.20. So what's the difference between application and firmware? And while we are at it - what is a bootloader that didn't change?

I also have a follow-up question:
Can I reload / return to an earlier version than currently installed? Namely from 7.3.3 to 4.0.17 if I should want to?

Yes, you can reload as you like. If using PEP1, you will want to go no higher than 7.1.21. Version 7.2.22 and higher are for PEP2 and forward and ProntoScripts on Firm Keys do not work if you download a PEP1 config to a remote with 7.2.22 or higher firmware.

Bootloader will never change. It is 'Application' that you are mainly concerned with.

Does the name IR firmware under settings (I have 4.0.20) indicate that it can only be changed by the company?
I note that on RC the Application under setting (I have 7.3.3) is often referred to as firmware update. Isn't it true that most people use the erroneous term firmware update when it is in fact a software update?

The nomenclature depends on a person's viewpoint.

In my case, i consider that the firmware is the flash memory OS that is loaded onto the remote. The fact that this is non-volatile memory, to me, correlates to firmware Whereas when I upload a config file, that is considered a software update.

If you have 7.3.3 that is the firmware version. The IR engine underneath is part of the 7.3.3 total release and no-one on this site that I can recall ever referred to 4.0.20.

Thank you for this clarification. I only mentioned it here, because it might be confusing to some users (in particular foreign language users; I noticed some use the German language, which is my mother tongue).
