I have been a long time user of various Pronto remotes. I had a TSU-9600 setup via network originally - but the past couple of years I have been using the stand alone with the TSU-9600/9800 along with the RFX-9400. It has been and still is working great.

Wanting to do a little more with my Home Theater I have purchased a RFX-9600 and have been trying to setup it up (with NO success) for the past few days. I am fairly computer literate but I will be the first to admit I am barely above the illiterate
level when it come to networking. I was very thankful when Windows 7 came along and basically all you had to do is plug everything in and it works when it came to networking.

Here is what I have -

TSU-9800 remote - Latest Firmware Installed
RFX -9600 Extender - Latest Firmware Installed
Netgear Router (N300)

I have tried a lot of combinations and nothing has worked. I have some VERY basic questions which will probably show my lack of knowledge when it comes to networking.

1) Are all of the IP addresses different for each piece of equipment?
2) Is the SSID obtained by the Pronto or am I missing where it should be entered in the programming for the remote?
3) Is DHCP better/worse than individual IP addresses?
4) If using DHCP should it be used the remote, extender and router.

Maybe if someone could list the A/B/C's of setup entry for the remote and extender and what the router should be set.

To this point everything I have done and downloaded to the remote results in the network icon at the top of the display having a RED X through it.

I probably have not asked all the questions I should have - so anyone having any ideas that might help - please pitch in.

By the way I have read the post by "gopronto" and many others so it is not like I have not searched and tried to solve this on my own.

Make sue your access point is set to "G' only, and set up with no encrption first , then add it at the end.

The SSID is set in the Access point, and all the prontos need the same SSID, wheich is entered on the Network setting page. if you require further help email me.

1) Yes, each device must have it's own IP
2) the pronto finds the network it should connect to with the SSID. You must input it into PEP2 under the network settings (when you use wireless) in the field SSID. If you don't do this the TSU will not be able to access the network. Also be sure that you know the SSID of you r router, and that the router has SSID broadcasting enabled (was reported that sometimes works with a secret SSID but is not generally advisable.
3) Depends. with fixed, your devices always use the same IP, with DHCP it can be different. with the DHCP the device has to ask the router for an IP address and the router has to provide one. Thus the DHCP server on the router must be enabled and properly configured. With DHCP you can't get IP duplication like in static. I prefer static.
4) Your option. The router (if it's the only one) must have a static, user defined IP (usually 192.168.1.1) it defines the IP space of his subnet (192.168.1.* with a mask 255.255.255.0). You can have the TSU in DHCP and RFX in static, your option.

To configure a RFX:
set a static IP address on the RFX (configure via browser, easyest with the provided crossover cable, type 192.168.8.80 in your web browser). If you use the crossover cable be sure to set that your computer has an IP in the same range as the RFX (ex. 192.168.8.10), you have to set this up in the network options of your PC. Don't leave it on automatic. If you use configure though router, use the extender discovery tool (make sure u flip the switch in the correct position).
When you're on the setup page of the RFX, set it to DHCP or static, your choice.

Then in PEP2 view->building blocks -> Equipment & codes -> add extender to project. Choose serial extender, and input the IP ( static or dhcp if dhcp leave unchecked). Be sure to assign it to the right ID, and that the RFX has the config switch in the use position.

This should be it. Sorry if it's a little chaotic, but don't have the time to clean the text up. Hope it helps.

Finally discovered what I was doing wrong.

I was selecting the "network" function on the TSU setup. Pretty simple!!

It is working GREAT now!!!
