Is prontosqueeze usable to control iTunes with just the squeezeserver installed?(no players)

Tried emailing him, but I haven't gotten a response after 10 days, so I hope some here have experience with it.

Yes, you have to tick a box in squeezeserver, and use the softsqueeze (an emulated squeezebox to play from your pc/mac without a hardware player.

Tenchi is busy with other exiting projects at the moment.....

Just as a thought, you could use the Pronto with the iTunes web interfaces (any of them), and use socket calls to change tracks, etc.. It really depends how complex you want it to be.

nimnul's suggestion is actually about using softsqueeze rather than iTunes (not to get the two confused, as one is Java-based and the other is Apple's app). I propose if you look into the web interfaces available there may be a way to use XML-RPC or similar to fire commands from the device to iTunes. As I don't use iTunes all I can suggest is looking at the development information available to do it. I might have a look at it later, but I suspect unless I really got into raiding docs about how Bonjour works (Apple's ZeroConf implementation, iirc.), I'd use a static IP for the PC with iTunes.

I hope it helps. (Though someone may already have a module or something out there to do it ...) If you know PHP, there were a few PHP implementations which hooked into iTunes. It may be worth digging them up, and modifying them so that hitting a certain URL using a POST variable (e.g. username/password) allows you to change things. e.g. POST action, POST username, POST password. :)
