I just installed Barry's slimpronto (which is very cool, Thanks). I made a button on my Home page with

CF.activity().wifiEnabled = false;

to turn off the wifi since I'll only need it for slimpronto and to save the battery. The wifi icon disappears when I use the button so I assume it's working but whenever I do any other activity on the remote the wifi pops back on. Any ideas?

My experience with the 9800 and 9600 is that there is no need to do that. If there is no actual wi-fi activity taking place, the periodic radio activations (I use WEP so I am not sure about WPA) have little effect on the battery charge state. SlimPronto does do a TCPIP transmission every 2 seconds to maintain synchronization but it will go to sleep if the settings indicate that is allowed to, and not do TCPIP. When it wakes up though it does stretch and query the squeeze Center to see what has happened when it was asleep. This is to make sure some other pronto did not change things and to get what is currently going on.

In my normal pronto use (other than slimpronto) I control my Theater and home by sending short TCPIP bursts when a key is pressed to either the Pronto PAL or the Theater PC (which I intend to replace with the PAL someday). In this mode of operation with wi-fi always on, I have never seen the battery have an issue. I sometimes do this for 6 hour stretches with the Pronto never being docked during that period.

When I finally go to bed at night after catching up on the news in the Bedroom using the pronto as just described, I just leave it on the bed turned on, undocked. I have come back 12 hours later and the battery is still reasonably charged, that is, it keeps on working.

Bottom line, IMHO don't bother turning off wi-fi.

Thanks. In my initial setup of slimpronto I was using the remote heavily and the battery got very low getting everything setup so I was concerned the wireless may be drawing more than normal IR usage.

BTW slimpronto is very slick. Thanks again.

If wifi is enabled in SystemProperties, leaving an activity and returning to it (view Diag Log) will reenable wifi. Jumping between activities will do the same.

The main reason that this option was put in place is to reconnect to a different access point prior to better roaming capabilities.
