I'd like to put together a multi-room audio system controlled by a Pronto 9600.
Is it possible to use the Escient FP-1 iPod interface (without an Escient music server) to stream music from a PC or iPod, and view metadata and select music from the 9600's Escient user interface?

Yes, it has to be used in conjunction with the included software. The FP-1 uses your pc as the server. The metadata shows up on the 9600 just fine.

That's good. Does the PC software support 'Wake on LAN'?

I installed the software the other day on a windows computer... it has to just be running. It runs in the taskbar and I think you could establish it as a service. Its so the FP can talk to something.. your pronto is talking to the FP

More than likely, if you do a netstat -a from a command line you will see something listening on port 7445. This is the port number that Escient uses for Fireball PC as well.

Springs - sorry, but I don't enirely understand what you're saying. Do you mean the PC has to be left on for the FP-1 to be able to access it?

Yes that is exactly what I mean. Also the FP client is a service that has to be running to make it work. Its not not Samba or shared file sharing, its streaming from a port.
Ummm Computer has to be on. Fireball PC must be running. (That is more to the point)

If computer is NOT on, then a real fireball will throw up a message about a disconnected Audio Server when first turned on.

Could you also use a TSU9600 for control (of audio only) if you used the FP-1 with a DVDM-552 (or AVX-552, or other Escient music/video devices with hard drives but which don't support the TSU9600 themselves), instead of using the FP-1 with a PC?

The DVDM552 and AVX products are compatible now for the hard drive portion and will be soon for the movie manager side. And yes, the FP1 can be pointed to look at the hard drive on the main fireball unit to serve as a second stream of content giving you 2 zones of audio from the single drive.
