I just got my 9600 and 9400 yesterday and I was hoping someone on the beta team or in the know can answer a quick question regarding the IP communication.

I know the 9600 can communicate two-way via IP for controlling equipment like the Escient and Lutron lighting. However, is this generic functionality exposed in the software?

I'm thinking of creating an interface to my MCE PC for instance to show the TV Guide info much like the Escient DVD/CD info is displayed.

Any tips/info would be appreciated. I work for an integrator BTW.

Thanks.

Oh, and how about a separate 9600 forum?

The functionality you speak of is not exposed in the software. It was requested of Philips during the beta test that a SDK be offered just for this purpose. No word at this time on what may happen on that front. That being said however, Lyndel with his programming background has already been able to successfully manipulate the Escient Music Server device to communicate with his home-brew media server as if it were an Escient Fireball serving up jacket pictures and everything. To get the full skinny check out Lyndels reply in another post here.

That is, I manipulated my media server to talk the Escient protocol expected by the TSU9600. Not the other way around.

Any idea who I should contact regarding the potential SDK?

Cheers.

I'm new in this forum, I've being using and programming PRONTO since the first model back in time, I have a 7500, and an iPronto (the only one i don't like) and just aqqire my first 9600.

I would like to make it work with my music collection, which i workout using my Media Center and in remote zones (wireless) I use the airport express solution from apple, using the Itunes, this solution is wonderfull, but it need a PC (I use a Tablet) to make it work.

Is there anything I can do to use the ESCIENT software with the AIRPORT EXPRESS?

Not unless you are a programmer. I downloaded the Escient IP protocol doc from the Escient site and basically modified my home brew media server to talk this protocol to the TSU9600. I have full functionality there but in your case, I've never used Airport so I can't tell much more.

Lyndel, Exactly which Escient document did you download to expose the IP protocol they use?

Never Mind, Got it. (External Control Protocol).

Has anybody had a chance to look at what the TSU9600 sends over a WiFi network when it is setup in network as opposed to stand alone mode?

Would it be possible to connect a PC in to the wireless network and have it act as (Spoof) a wireless extender. It appears that Philips has got everything positioned to be able to do that. The WiFi message must eventually convert to or all ready be a standard IP message if it is able to be carried across a standard ethernet network (wired) to a Philips wireless extender. All I want to do is get the equivalent of an IR code into a PC with no IR involved and preferably using IP protocol over WiFi. This then opens the TSU9600 control to be usable with many home automation systems and almost any PC application with good reliable networking as opposed to IR (Which is not that bad). I would write the necessary activex control and provide it gratis so others could develop applications using the TSU9600 as a control panel.

If only it were two way.......

Has anyone tried writing an interface to convert between the Escient protocol and Applescript to control iTunes on a Mac. Or some script system to control iTunes on a PC? It would seem to me that coming up with such a thing could sell a LOT of TSU9600s. :-)
A little nuts, but I'm single so I can usually get away with it.

I think what we are seeing here is a multi-part approach by Phillips, within the new 9600. Wi-Fi remotes using the WAP network environment have been subject to a lot of network peculiarities, causing the Nevo SL and a few other Wi-Fi remotes to struggle, mostly based on the quality of the network.

That being said, I am guessing Phillips decided to eliminate the open wi-fi part in lieu of restricted control with Escient and Radio RA. Until such time they have proven to be solid, I am guessing Philips might not open the environment further.

So, until they open the environment further, most people cannot control other objects without a serious programming background, like Lyndell. Others will have to live with the limited wi-fi control aspects for awhile.
