I recently had my Control System replaced with a URC (Universal Remote Control) Total Control System (MRX-10 Controller and TRC-1080 Remotes).

The system was constantly dropping and lagging when controlling the Direct TV Genie (both main box and small boxes)

We spent thousands on the system and my installer spend hours trying to trace the problem.

Eventually he spoke with the tech department at URC and they admitted the IP controller does not work/work well with the Direct TV genie products

I am guessing Elan, Crestron and Control 4 play nice with the biggest selling control box for Direct TV

So the solution is to go back to having a bunch of IR emitters - should have stuck with the old Complete Control - cheaper and same functionality

Unbelievable that URC is selling an expensive system that boasts capabilities it can't deliver

What network do you have installed with the system?

sorry and Ubiquiti Switch PoE 24 POE switch to power the wifi point UniFi

We switched over to a netgear wifi router completely shutting down the Ubiquiti network and still had the same dropping and lag issues

I sell Savant and control4 systems to some of the wealthiest people on the planet. Hall of fame atheletes, billionaire titans of industry and the like. I would never in a million years provide them with an IP controlled Directv system. No matter which control system you use, you are dependent on the DirecTV network staying up (local box deca network). It's just begging for trouble. We do crestron and Elan as well. With Total Control you are at least half the cost of those other two systems. I would argue that controlling the DirecTV boxes via annIR emitter is a fine and rock solid way to go.

That said I have used the URC total control IP driver in my own home with zero issues. One genie box and 3 clients.

I am with cgav on this one. The only two people that will get a two way DirecTV driver is my next door neighbor and me - on any control platform - Savant, RTI, URC alike. One firmware change by DTV and that's all she wrote. I know a recent one crippled some features (although not that important) with RTI, but it could have easily been worse.

Stick to IR - you will be fine. There are people out there that have spent a lot more that are happy with their control systems that control DTV one-way.

IP control of DirecTV is a problem with any control system. The DirecTV receivers themselves are mostly to blame, add on network issues and you get the idea.

RS232 control using the IO Gear USB to 232 converters has always been rock solid, same with IR.

1 way IP control of the main Genie unit and standard DirecTV receivers has been rock solid for me using Total Control.

The IP control of genie clients is limited.  there are no discrete power commands and if you get into certain setup menus, the IP control locks up.  This happens with any control system.  There is an issue in the DirecTV software for Genie clients.

That said, if you are using the URC 2 way module to control DirecTV, then that is an issue.  I gave up on that module awhile ago because it keeps locking up.  Switch to the 1 way driver that I built and was posted on the URC Control Room, and you won't have any issues.
