I have an URC MX-9000 remote control. I use this for my home theater and component matrix in my house.

I am now integrating a WHS/HTPC and potentialy a NAS unit into the mix.

I know I can control my Windows Media Center on the HTPC using WMC remote codes. However, I may also want to control the desktop of that HTPC (aside from remoting in via a laptop). The WMC remote is only effective for navigating within WMC.

It is not clear to me if my MX-9000 fits the bill for the additional functionality required for the computer hardware.

Is there an option out there that is better for me? And is there any merit in exploring options via iPhone/iPad?

Thanks

IR-based control of the desktop IS possible (other third-party HTPC remotes have attempted to offer this, and there is - or was - an official Microsoft full IR keyboard with cursor control that I'm not sure anyone took the time to duplicate)... but it's really a crude level of control at best.

I think the first questions you need to ask yourself are: what do you need to do, how complex is it, how frequently, and how conveniently?
