Does anyone know where or how to find the device remote control code I should use with the remote control supplied standard with a Bell Expressvu 9242 HD PVR in order to use it to control a Harmon Kardon AVR254 surround sound receiver.

The 9242 User Manual suggests three device codes for Tuner/Amplifiers made by Harmon Kardon, namely: 640, 672, 751.

Each of these codes works for Power UP, Volumne UP/Down, Mute (and perhaps other functions I haven't tried) ... BUT ... none of them work to Power Down the HK AVR 254. So I'm still stuck having to keep the HK remote control handy just to turn it off after we're done watching satellite TV.

The 9242 does offer a scan function but it's entirely manual meaning the user has to manually press a button up to 1000 times in order to see if a suitable code is found. Not much fun and you're never sure if you waited long enough or if it actually got found or passed over. For example, after several hundred button presses to increment the device code during the scan process, it still hadn't found any which would turn the HK254 off.

Thanks.

Sorry but with HK's use of two-key power scheme, one key for ON and another for OFF, you will not find a single code that does both in ANY remote, which only has a single power key. One of the commands will always be missing.

Edmund,
That makes complete sense. I'm not familiar enough with this technology to have ruled out that another button (other than the POWER button) on the 9242's remote might not have been used to act as the POWER DOWN button in such a case.

I suspect you're bang on. I may have to put the lot on a programmable learning remote or something like that.

My other option might be to try this in reverse. The HK AVR254's remote is programmable also and quite sophisticated for an AV receiver remote (e.g. Punch-Through, Macro abilities, etc.). My problem in trying to program it to control the Bell Expressvu 9242 satellite receiver is that HK doesn't list any Bell satellite receivers in their device code tables. I'm not sure who manufactures that satellite receiver for Bell. Their tech support weren't sure ... one of their techs suggested possibly Echostar.

I suppose I could manually cycle the HK AVR254's remote through all possible codes in scan mode to see if I can find one. Just a bit of a nuisance but may ultimately take less time than digging for the info for hours.

I'd be happy for any suggestions if anyone has already figured this out.

Thanks.

Hey guys,

1. DISH makes the hardware for Bell ExpressVu. You used to multiply the DISH model number by 10 to get the BEV equivalent (eg DISH 920 = BEV 9200 if I remember right). This has always worked for me.
2. Try issuing power off command by pressing the power toggle button twice in quick succession. So, issue command twice. This is how I power off my Yamaha receiver when it is otherwise just an on/off toggle. Somebody told me that was not exclusive to Yamaha - you might get lucky!
