when using total remote (newest version) i can only use IrDA and not griffin IR
and the range is about 20 cm is there anything to do about it?

It's the ir problem of this PDA. It's better to upgrade to a more powerful handheld. Here are the recommendations: [Link: novii.tv] (see 'compatible with') But I won't promise that these recommendations will work for Total Remote.
