I wonder if the makers of the Pronto could be lobbied to port their user interface for use with Palm devices?

The layout of the devices seems similar, and depending on what language they wrote their software in, it might be portable to Palm development (a little change to the screen resolution here, a little tweak of the device interface code there...).

I'd be willing to pay a some fair coin for the graphics I just witnessed in the Pronto area of this web site.

Alternatively, of course, someone could develop a better app for the Palm (as I inquired about in a separate thread). Both current options I know of for the Palm have nice features, and are probably functional, but have very, very, very ugly graphics.

Extremely unlikely........... more like in the range of NO CHANCE AT ALL!!! It is hard enough for them to write for the processor and architecture they have in the Pronto, let alone port it.

Plus, they make money selling their hardware. They might have ported the software to the new Yamaha remote, but I'll guarantee that if this is the case, the processor and architecture are the same or very similar.

OmniRemote is the only company that that I think will do anything about a better interface, and I'm not betting on it, or even when the next version will come out!

It's entirely possible that the Pronto software is written in a language like C or C++, which is entirely architecture independent, except for code for communicating with the hardware.

If Philips is in the business of making money, they would have a hell of a bigger profit margin on software that has no manufacturing overhead, depending on what they would charge.

The Yamaha remote *is* a Pronto, just in a new case. I believe they're still built by Philips.

The old Pronto used the same Dragonball 16MHz processor as the Palm Devices. So, unless there has been a recent change this is clearly possible. The hangup is the poor resolution on the Palm 160x160 vs the Pronto 240x320 I believe.

Even the color Pronto uses a Dragonball processer. The issue is it's a completely different operating system.

I agree that Phillips is in the business of making money, but to provide software for some other companies hardware/software means another avenue for them to support. Support costs money and and you can bet that the minute a problem comes up Phillips will blame xyz company and xyz will blame Phillips.

I would venture that their is not enough money in it for Phillips to port it over, forget the fact that Palm, Handspring, Compaq, etc would problably not want to pay/package the software for their given hardware. And would a substantial number of users want to buy the software compared to dloading it from some site that is illegally posting it?

Remember development + marketing + support + profit = $$.
