I would like to know if all ipaqs need a remote extenders to work well as IR remotes or, is it that some programs do not work well with ipaq IR systems? It's confusing just coming into this story and I would like to get going but have little time at the moment. Is there a quick summary to this?

Should I just get a Dell and be done?

My primary interest is wi fi remote control for a Squeezebox but these IR capabilities may be nice to have sometime as well. I know Dell or ipaq can do the wi-fi. Its the IR that is not clear to me.

Thanks,
Rick

Go to the HP iPaq page and look at all the detailed specs you can find for the model you are looking at. I did today and the 3000 series media versions ( I found 2 of them ) both had a irda ( commercial/residential ) capability according to their specs.. You may have to go thru several layers of specs to find this. They also came w/ Bluetooth and reg. wireless. kdcon

I know about that, but it seems from what I have read that the IR functionality of these remotes is not all that great sometimes, maybe never. I am trying to find out what causes these conditions. Some programs it definately doesn't work with and others, well I don't know but would like to. All I do knowis supposedly the Dell 30 and 50 are for sure good for this.

Don't know if they are good or not either. Researching like you. Would really like to use a PDA type though that lets you see the info you are selecting. Also an IR repeater/ extender system is easy to setup for better range. Hopefully someone with handson exp. will post to help us. Let me know what you find out, thanks, kdcon

rickp,

if you want to use an iPAQ with something else than the built in Nevo software you are screwed.
HP didn't document the software interface, so no one except nevo is able to use it properly. (I know PDAWIn has managed to do a little bit about it, but it's far from perfect)

So does that mean then that Dell works well with the other programs out there or, it too is an HP inside? Or what devices do the programs work well with?

Isn't there a more active forum regarding ppc's for IR remote use? I'd like to find out if any of the programs are satisfying people. The idea of a smaller sleeker remote than the Pronto/Marantz solution is really attractive but not at the expense of frustration in use.

Thanks,
Rick
