I'm hoping to buy a new PDA for xmas to use as a remote for all my AV gear and also as a remote for my HTPC...

I'm eyeing up the Fujitsu Siemens Loox 720 which has wifi, bluetooth and "IrDa(consumer level)"....

I'm slightly unsure if this would be suitable to control my AV gear? I read this on the nevo site was is what confused me

"most consumer electronics devices are tuned to receive consumer IR (infrared), not IrDA"

My goal is to use the PDA IR to control my receiever, tv etc and use wifi to control the HTPC and act as a audio interface like this

The only PDA that seems to use consumer wavelength ir diodes is the Dell Axim, the X3 and X30 give excellent range (I think the X30 has less range though).
I'm happily using NetRemote (incl. working repeating buttons!) and found the X3 giving me a 5-7m range whilst being a bargain...
Try it- it's downloadable from proximis.com.
Most HP's (Compaq) have a very limited range, dunno abt others.
Of course you'd best construct your own ccf file, it's a lot of fun, but that's a different story!

It's Dec 15, 2004, 11:30am and I've just got off the phone with Dell and with HP.

I'm shopping for a PDA that has built in CIR (Consumer Infrared) and WiFi.

The Dell guy had some bad news and it's confusing:
I asked which PDA's had both WiFi and CIR built in.
He put me on hold and came back and said NONE of their PDAs had CIR. I said that had to be wrong, I keep reading (especially from Don!) that the X3i's did great and the X30's were almost as good. The Dell guy insisted that he'd spoked with a very authoritative guy who not only worked in tech support, but was also one of their PDA designers and he'd certainly know what he was talking about.

Dell sure doesn't claim CIR for the X30 on their website and there's no mention of the X3i at all. (Don't you wish all companies would have a "decommissioned products" area?).

Has Dell ever publically claimed that their X30's had CIR?

HP on the other named several of their models that had CIR and WiFi:
- 4705: $650. VGA screen, super nice. Way much $.
- 3115: $350: 300 MHz Samsung CPU, 56mb "available memory"
- 3715: $500: 400 MHz Samsung CPU, 125mb "available memory"
(basically the 3715 is the 3115 w/ a faster CPU and more memory. That's what the sale guy said anyway. And no HP comes bundled with any tv-remote software and they sell none as well.)

I'm going to re-post this pretty much as a main thread b/c Dell's CIR denial is so strange.
