Because Don Stratton said so, I ordered a Dell Axim X3 Standard today, just for remote use.
Now, did I do right picking the cheapest one?
They had a special deal on these since the X30 appeared...
I mean- only 32mB RAM?
300 MHz CPU?
Is that fast enough to support PDAWIN and/or Total Remote?
And do these programs work well under Windows PPC 2003?
That's because I noted different ir ranges 2002 vs 2003 (2003 seems weaker on the Ipaq 3950 cir).

I would prefer the unit with wireless built-in--the X3i. Any information on whether the remote control feature is any different than the X3. Thank you

Hey, you said it yourself; _I_ _said_ _so_ !! ;)

Plenty of RAM and tons of speed for remote apps. Best built-in IrDA of any current PPC. Dirt cheap. It's just that simple. :)

Did you try it under Windows 2003, Don?

PPC 2003 SE and new vga screens may pose a problem:
1/ Does TR work with SE? (according to Barend it works on 2003)
2/ Does it look good on a vga screen (Toshiba e800)? And in landscape mode?
3/ What about ccf files on vga screens: totally different resolution. If you change esolutions on a screen, icons look smaller. So might have to make them bigger. Means re-editing your ccf, no?

Yes, Dell needed it for the release of the X30 which supports landscape mode.

2/ Does it look good on a vga screen (Toshiba

Landscape, yes. VGA, no. The only VGA PPC I have at the moment is the e800, and even after the update to handle landscape mode it was not really practical for us to properly use the VGA area due to the fairly substantial rewrite of certain routines that had been hard-coded for QVGA. This means that Total Remote will only use the upper lefthand corner of the VGA screen to display the skin/CCF, but does make use of larger OS-generated menus and such.

The next major release of Total Remote will have full VGA support, allowing for native-mode skins with four times the current resolution. That should be terribly impressive. :)

different resolution. If you change esolutions

I don't know if "VGA" and "CCF" belong in the same sentence, except when adding the words "no" and "with" in various combinations. I am VERY hesitant to make a new type of non-standard CCF that is only usable in Total Remote and CANNOT be used in a Pronto. While this may be a kajillion times easier way to add higher resolution than to try to reverse-engineer the newer PCF format, it seems of questionable value to the CCF community in general.

well, you could use tonto create an screen with any size, so the CCF is not limited any more.

They probably use one of the newer 3V 885nm IrDA transceivers that are designed for both IrDA and CIR. 885nm is a compromise between IrDA (850nm) and CIR (940nm). Agilent says their HSDL-3005 model has CIR range of 8m.
