Hi,
I have read some comments about that Dell X3 does not work with CCF files and often crash. Is this fixed in the latest version? I need to know before I buy a X3.

I bought a x3 based on the comments and assurance from Don Stratton's posts that they worked closely with Dell to insure that it works well and correctly.

I started using it with CCFs about 2 weeks ago, and it works fine for me (YMMV), I have not had it crash. I used Daniel Tonk's CCF as a base, and used Tonto to customize it to my liking. I do not use native mode at all.

Although be aware that only the first 4 hard buttons seem to work, though Don said in version 3+ they will start adding enhancements to make that more flexible.

Don,

Please just give me some response even if it is
just to say i am up a creek!

You _may_ be up a creek. A very special creek I call "YMMV" (Your Mileage May Vary), also known as "it works for me" syndrome.

I have never heard of this problem. I do not have a 39xx to test, but I have never seen a ROM update stop Total Remote from working. I have done updates that aren't even supported by Compaq/HP for public use, and they still always worked.

I have heard from a very large percentage of iPaq 41xx users that have had 50/50 success. Some get it to work with no more effort than an install, some must adjust iPaq-specific audio properties in the control panels, and some never get it to work. Perhaps HP did something to affect the audio, which could GREATLY affect Total Remote's audio transmitter, and perhaps this nebulous "something" also applies to your 39xx. Dunno. YMMV.

Was there any special setup pre EUU3 to get the
IR transmitter to work?

No, in fact the father back in time you go the less there was to tweak and/or go wrong. Total Remote was developed on some stock 3630s, and worked fine. Subsequent ROM and OS updates did not affect it negatively AT ALL.

Have you looked at the IPAQ development kit from
HP to possible resoved all IPAQ issues and ensure
that it works?

Heh. You are a funny man.

From what I have seen even Compaq/HP can't get their crud to work in a consistant fashion. The specs may say that most iPaqs should operate identically, but the reality reminds me of an old quote often used in engineering; "In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice... but in practice there is."

All I can do is keep buying new iPaqs. :/

Is this like any other problem you have seen with
other PDA's?

Only the aforementioned 41xx issue with the audio trnsmitter.

Is there any chance this will ever get resolved?

No. Wait... yes! Uh, wait... maybe?

I can't resolve it if I have no idea what is causing it. If I can resolve it, I will. If I can't, you can predict the outcome.

Don,
at least you responded which is better than nothing. =)

I looked at the post on turning you IPOD into a remote. Is there anyway you...

or anyone else out there...

Can send me the "working" default "Sony DVD" wav files, per function, generated in this way. At least then i can try to tech the issue myself, and see if anything i do get's the wav files closer or if i can get this to work.

If i find a solution i will be more then happy to post it and send it to Griffin, and hopefully help you fix this in a future release.

I have a feeling that i am going to have to learn to be a frequency expert before my remote will work.

Everyone remember that while we are all waiting for the new version to come out! ;)

We did not write that article, we did not provide any assistance to the author, and had no idea about it until our servers began feeling the "slashdot effect". While it is basically the same thing as we demo'ed at a Macworld over 2 years ago, we abandoned the idea of doing a remote control on an iPod mostly due to the inelegant interface of forcing users to play "songs" that correspond to IR commands, and the incredible size of the files involved (about 2 GIGABYTES for our standard IR code database, which is LESS than 16 KILOBYTES on the Pocket PC).

We do not have our database in the form of audio files, nor is there any practical application for Total Remote that might cause us to do so. We are working, very very slowly, to make some desktop software that will allow a person to browse through our IR database, select the devices and functions you want, and have it render audio files. With any luck you may also be able to scrape codes off CCFs, and cue up macro functions to write out one long audio control file (handy for turning on ALL your gear, adjusting the volume and changing the channel to 153 from ONE song file). This will likely be for Macs first, and then Windows shortly thereafter. NO RELEASE DATE CAN BE DEFINED AT THIS TIME. Stay tuned, I will certainly announce it here when it happens.

Please read the post I made about 4 messages back
regarding v3.0. That is all I can tell you at
this time, because that is all that matters: the
IR core is getting overhauled. For those who
know what this means, great. For those who don't,
it means it will work better and with more devices.

FWIW, some of the beta testers are playing with
the new build that supports RC5 codes, and it
appears to work well. I _think_ we just crossed
the last barrier to eclipsing TVRC. Gotta love
it. :)

Will the skinning remain the same? Should I hold off on creating any until version 3.0?

Unfortunately (for the skins) or fortunately (for my bank account), I'm working on a paid interface design project that has spent much of my pixel pushing reserves. I do hope to tinker with it ASAP, though.

Cheers!

The skinning will remain the same, although you can anticipate VGA support eventually. There is no reason we cannot keep full compatibility with the current skin style. It is one of the many flexibilities afforded by using this kind of mask system; we have a lot of flexibility in coding the core when there is such a simple and standardized (from our perspective) way of interacting with the UI.

my bank account), I'm working on a paid interface

As soon as you come up with something I would love to see it!

Hi all,

Thanks to a catastrophic hard drive crash I have lost all E-mail from mid-February until now. This comes at a poor time, as I was just about to ask some of my regulars to beta test the new version prior to official release.

To those of you whom I recently sent the RC5 test version (not fully functional), PLEASE send me another E-mail so I can keep in touch!

To those of you who wish to be considered for inclusion in the Total Remote beta testing program, please send an E-mail to trbeta_at_griffintechnology_dotcom. Preferential consideration will be given to those with relavent experience that would aid and contribute to the beta testing program.

PLEASE NOTE: beta testing software IS NOT FUN, and it IS NOT COOL. If you are looking to get a free copy of Total Remote before anyone else, forget it. Chances are the betas will have some bugs in them that hamper full usage... that why they are "betas" and not "releases". The only reason in the WORLD to be a beta tester is because you are dedicated to the software and would like to insure it is as good as can be. Beta testers who send back two-word replies like "works fine" will be dropped from the program. Beta testers who send detailed E-mails with repeatable test procedures and helpful input will be elevated to near-deity in my eye.

Please also note that the beta program is open ONLY to Total Remote customers with a valid registration code.

To the person who asked for UK dealers: I haven't
a clue. I am merely a humble hardware engineer,
and have next to no idea what is going on in the
rest of the company. I would suggest either calling
or dropping an E-mail to tech support and ask
them to see if we have sold any to a dealer in
the UK.

Hi,
I bought mine from www.expansys.fr (I am in France) but expansys.com is also in UK. You can find it here :

Hey, I knew it was worth trawling through 8 screens of this board!

I looked at this, and shipping to the UK would have doubled the price!

Thanks to those who pointed to Expansys (I used these people for the Symbol WiFi cards a while back, so I know they do deliver).

I love the idea of getting rid of clutter (I use a Home Theatre master MX-500 - LOVELY bit of kit, but it's getting a bit old now). I like hard buttons but £26 for a colour programmable remote is too good to miss.

I agree with others who say that BECAUSE Don replies it generates a degree of loyalty. It is far too common to get customer support which is lack-lustre.

Let's see if it works on a Toshiba e570... if it does I'll be buying another for spouse!

Wanna try the beta team E-mail again? They got several messages this morning, so we know it works.

I love all the spam policing around the world. It almost guarantees that in a given week I will be unable to communicate with 25% of the planet because someone is on someone else's spam list. :/
