I want to buy an ir extender from ultramote for my ipaq 5550. The ultramote software doesn't work on the 5550 so they won't sell it to me even though I don't want to use their software but use pdawin instead (one of the threads suggests this is no problem). Is there a way around this or do I need to buy another make of extender and if so what is recommended.

The model is only meant for the software. The extender is always the same. So just give them another model number (i.e. 3800) and order the extender+software (of course in your case the ultramote software will be even more useless, but as you said, you use PDAWin)
If PDAWin works on your 5550, then the extender will work just fine .
Remember to turn the IR to "external" within PDAWin...
Question: does your 5550 come with a CF slot? Otherwise you need a CF pack to slide on your 5550. Just making sure you're aware of it.
good luck

Thanks. I will give them another model no. as you suggest. In the meantime my ipaq has an SD slot but not a CF slot so I will have to get an expansion pack for it.

Hi Buxe

Unfortunately it would appear that you have to be able to download the ultramote software onto the pda to get the registration no. you need to order the extender. As you know my 5550 isn/t compatible and although my wife has an ipaq 2210 that isn't compatible either. It is really irritating that they won't even let you buy the hardware without having the software. If there is no way round this can you suggest another make of extender I could buy

Sorry,
I hadn't noticed that detail... Don't you know anybody with a compatible PDA?
The reason I ask is that at least the hardware (IR extender) is 100% sure to work with PDAWin...
BUT: I seem to remember other sokutions beenig named a few month ago in this forum. Have you searched this forum back in time with keywords like "extender" etc?

Thanks I think I have cracked it by resurrecting a really old pda which seemed to take the software and give me the registration key so hopefully I will now receive the hardware!

I too have a Ipaq 2210 and wanted to buy the ultramote extender to use with PDAWin. Any chance you could provide me with the registration key you needed to order the hardware so I can also place an order.

Cheers

Rob.

I'm not sure if that's a good idea. I can't remember off-hand, but I think that the registration key is unique for each device ID. So if you order the Extender combo using Baz's registration key, they might not like it very much.

Then again, it's not like you're pirating software.....you're still having to buy it regardless. So who knows. Might work without any problems. :)

I have now got the ultramote extender but I can't get pdawin to use it. When I go into output on pdawin it shows "use internal ir" ticked but the option to "use external ir" is greyed out. I have the full version of pdawin not just the evaluation copy. What do I need to do?

Both Laser and PDAwin list the PDAs with which the CF extender works on their web pages. Neither the 2210 nor 5550 are listed. No expansion sleeves are supported as the pin used for the IR signal isn't connected to the CF slot in the sleeves.

Here is my 2 cents.

I have a Dell Axim X5 and purchased the Ultramote and software combo.

I too did not like (or want) the Ultramote software and it did not have the capabilities of more automation that I wanted but I wanted the IR Extender so I bought the combo for $35. Not a bad deal just for the CF IR Card.

I had PDAWin 5.0 and the External CF IR Extender did not work with the Dell Axim X5. I got the new version of PDAWin 5.5 and the Ultramote IR Extender works great which tells me that it is a firmware/rev issue that has been resolved since the last version.

I have an ipaq 2210 and a ultramote ir extender but will not work with pdawin as the option to select external cf extender is greyed out im sure the extender and software are compatible but in my case pdawin does not support the external cf ir on the 2210 yet and i am eagerly awaiting a software update.

I hope you can get it to work.

I had the same problem but it was caused by the PDAWin version 5.0. I downloaded version 5.5 and installed it and it works.
