I have just purchased an Ipaq h5550 which comes complete with wireless connectivity built in. I hadn;t realised however that it doesn't come with Nevo unlike the cheaper ipaqs for no obviously good reason. Is there any way I can use it for IR control i.e. can I buy software instead of Nevo (which can't be added on later apparently as it has to be embedded in the pda's rom).

You can probably use PDAWin or Novii remote.

The IR from the standard 5550 machine is supposed to be of much lower power than the Nevo machines. I have not used one so can't say from experience.

You will probably need to go out and buy an extra IR emitter module/expansion pack that takes an IR CF card.

Alternatively go for wireless control using Netremote, using the Wireless LAN on the iPAQ, home wireless network, and an IR blaster connected to your PC, in the room where you want the IR kit controlled from. The good thing about this is that you can control the PC from the iPAQ(using Girder), can control IR devices without being in the same room, and if you want to get really fancy, control PC and IR devices over a VPN via the internet from any where.

I almost made the same mistake as you, buying a 5550, but wanted the IR control, so bought a second hand 5450 on e-bay

Hope it works out

Neil

However, the 5550 seems one of the few that works with TR's audio plug-in.
Don't use it, mine's a cheap Axim X3 that fires 7 m !

Of course I may be biased...
